The antioxidant properties of two series of thiazolidinones and thiazinanones were reported. The novel six-membered thiazinanones were synthesized from the efficient multicomponent reaction of 2-picolylamine (2-aminomethylpyridine), arenaldehydes, and the 3-mercaptopropionic acid in moderate to excellent yields. These novel compounds were fully identified and characterized by NMR and GC-MS techniques.

The reaction with 2-aminopyridine needs a Lewis acid catalysis to afford the corresponding 2-aryl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones. All novel compounds were identified and characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra.
