Identification of the molecular carriers of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) requires gas phase electronic spectra of suitable candidate structures. Recording the spectra of these in the laboratory is challenging because they include large, carbon-rich molecules, many of which are likely to be ionic. The electronic spectra of ions are often obtained using action spectroscopy methods, which can induce small perturbations to the absorption characteristics and hinder comparison with astronomical observations.

We present the low temperature gas-phase vibrational spectrum of ionised 1-cyanonaphthalene (1-CNN) in the mid-infrared region. Experimentally, 1-CNN ions are cooled below 10 K in a cryogenic ion trapping apparatus, tagged with He atoms and probed with tuneable radiation. Quantum-chemical calculations are carried out at a density functional theory level.

We present the first experimental vibrational spectra of gaseous oxidized derivatives of C in protonated and radical cation forms, obtained through infrared multiple-photon dissociation spectroscopy using the FELIX free-electron laser. Neutral CO has two nearly iso-energetic isomers: the epoxide isomer in which the O atom bridges a CC bond that connects two six-membered rings and the annulene isomer in which the O atom inserts into a CC bond connecting a five- and a six-membered ring. To determine the isomer formed for CO in our experiment─a question that cannot be confidently answered on the basis of the DFT-computed stabilities alone─we compare our experimental IR spectra to vibrational spectra predicted by DFT calculations.
