Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most serious conditions of the central nervous system, causing motor and sensory deficits that lead to a significant impairment in the quality of life. Previous studies have indicated that inosine can promote regeneration after SCI. Here we investigated the effects of inosine on the behavioral and morphological recovery after a compressive injury.

Early-Onset Respiratory Muscle Paralysis in Crotalic Envenomation: A Case Study.

Crotalic envenomation is responsible for approximately 8%-13% of ophidism cases in Brazil, yet it is associated with the highest mortality among snakes. We describe the case of a patient bitten by a rattlesnake who developed ventilatory muscle paralysis within hours after envenomation. While diaphragmatic paralysis is a rare late neurotoxic event following crotalic envenomation, in this case, paralysis occurred early but was rapidly reversed after antivenom administration.

Acute effects of sediments taken from an urban stream on physiological and biochemical parameters of the neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus.

Juveniles of Prochilodus lineatus were exposed to sediments collected from one of five sites along an urban stream into which various types of contaminants are discharged. After 24 or 96 h fish were examined and the results compared with those from control groups (fish exposed only to water, for the same period). Plasma ion levels varied significantly and fish exposed to site 5 sediment showed a transient increase in both sodium and chloride concentrations.
