Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how nursing and medical students manage their cardiovascular health and related risk factors.
  • A survey of 413 students revealed that 73.3% considered themselves healthy, but identified significant risks for cardiovascular diseases among those who were sedentary, irregularly active, or highly stressed.
  • The findings suggest that proactive health measures among students are crucial, as neglecting their health could negatively impact their future professional duties.

The Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire-12 (KCCQ-12) is a simple, feasible, and sensitive questionnaire developed in English for assessing the health status (symptoms, function, and quality of life) of patients with heart failure (HF). We aimed to assess the internal consistency and construct validity of the Portuguese version of KCCQ-12. We administered the KCCQ-12, the Minnesota Living Heart Failure (MLHFQ), and the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification by telephone.

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder of neurodevelopmental origin that affects around 1% of the world's population. Proteomic studies and other approaches have provided evidence of compromised cellular processes in the disorder, including mitochondrial function. Most of the studies so far have been conducted on postmortem brain tissue from patients, and therefore, do not allow the evaluation of the neurodevelopmental aspect of the disorder.

Background: Schizophrenia is a complex and severe neuropsychiatric disorder, with a wide range of debilitating symptoms. Several aspects of its multifactorial complexity are still unknown, and some are accepted to be an early developmental deficiency with a more specifically neurodevelopmental origin. Understanding the timepoints of disturbances during neural cell differentiation processes could lead to an insight into the development of the disorder.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied brain cells called astrocytes in people with schizophrenia to understand what makes them different from healthy ones.* -
  • They found that these abnormal astrocytes have problems with their immune responses and can affect how new blood vessels grow.* -
  • One specific substance, called interleukin-8 (IL-8), was released more by the schizophrenia-related astrocytes and made new blood vessels smaller.*

Brain abnormalities and congenital malformations have been linked to the circulating strain of Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil since 2016 during the microcephaly outbreak; however, the molecular mechanisms behind several of these alterations and differential viral molecular targets have not been fully elucidated. Here we explore the proteomic alterations induced by ZIKV by comparing the Brazilian (Br ZIKV) and the African (MR766) viral strains, in addition to comparing them to the molecular responses to the Dengue virus type 2 (DENV). Neural stem cells (NSCs) derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPSCs) were cultured both as monolayers and in suspension (resulting in neurospheres), which were then infected with ZIKV (Br ZIKV or ZIKV MR766) or DENV to assess alterations within neural cells.

The therapeutic use of classical psychedelic substances such as d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) surged in recent years. Studies in rodents suggest that these effects are produced by increased neural plasticity, including stimulation of the mTOR pathway, a key regulator of metabolism, plasticity, and aging. Could psychedelic-induced neural plasticity be harnessed to enhance cognition? Here we show that LSD treatment enhanced performance in a novel object recognition task in rats, and in a visuo-spatial memory task in humans.

Article Synopsis
  • Trypanosoma cruzi exhibits significant diversity in its physical characteristics and ability to affect the host, leading to various disease symptoms.
  • Two strains were studied to assess their growth patterns and molecular traits, showing rapid growth by day seven and classified morphologically as Group I.
  • Group TcI is linked to heart issues, while T. sherlocki seems to be adapting in ways that could lead to future health concerns.

The loss of continuity of the nerve structure interrupts the transmission of nerve impulses and leads to the disorganization of functional activities. Many methods, as the use of neurogenic factors, aid in the process of neural regeneration by accelerating or improving peripheral nerves neoformation. The adipose tissue is abundant in the human body, and it has presented promising results in the regeneration of peripheral nerves.

This study aimed to identify the Trypanosoma cruzi genotypes and their relationship with parasitic load in distinct geographic and ecotypic populations of Triatoma brasiliensis in two sites, including one where a Chagas disease (ChD) outbreak occurred in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. Triatomine captures were performed in peridomestic and sylvatic ecotopes in two municipalities: Marcelino Vieira - affected by the outbreak; and Currais Novos - where high pressure of peridomestic triatomine infestation after insecticide spraying have been reported. The kDNA-PCR was used to select 124 T.

The frog species exists in the Amazonian region and harbors heteromorphic Z and W chromosomes. A genetic lineage closely related to this species was recognized based on its mitochondrial DNA and RADseq-style markers, but its taxonomic status is still unclear and has been referred to as Lineage 1 of "". The heteromorphic sex chromosomes found in are not present in this lineage and which of its chromosome pairs is homologous to the sex chromosomes of remain to be elucidated as well as the role of such a karyotypic divergence in the evolution of these frogs.

Sodium valproate (VPA) is a classic anticonvulsive, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, and a chromatin remodeling inducer. When injected into specimens of Triatoma infestans, a vector of Chagas disease, VPA affects the chromatin supraorganization of chromocenter heterochromatin in only a few cells of the Malpighian tubules. To test whether this result was explained by the inaccessibility of all of the organ's cells to the drug, we investigated the nuclear phenotypes and global acetylation of lysine 9 in histone H3 (H3K9ac) in Malpighian tubules cultivated in vitro for 1-24 h in the presence of 0.
