Leprosy in Colombia: A look from life experience.

Leprosy continues to be stigmatized, causing harm to fundamental rights, pain and hopelessness in those who have suffered from it and their families. From its relationship with public and mental health, effective strategies must be implemented to reduce stigma and unlearn myths and wrong perceptions, support families, and improve quality of life through early care and detection. This article shows that those affected by leprosy are capable, functional people with much to contribute to society anywhere in the world.

Overstory-understory land cover mapping at the watershed scale: accuracy enhancement by multitemporal remote sensing analysis and LiDAR.

In forested watersheds, density, land cover, and its vertical structure are crucial factors for flood management, ecosystem monitoring, and biomass inventory. Nowadays, producing land cover maps with high accuracy has become a reality with the application of remote sensing techniques, but in some situations, it is not so easy to distinguish between the overstory and understory vegetation with only spectral information. The main goal of this study was to analyze the accuracy enhancement in overstory and understory land cover mapping at the watershed scale when using the data fusion of seasonal and annual time series of Sentinel-2 images complemented with low-density LiDAR and soil and vegetation indices.

Acute kidney injury applying pRifle scale in Children of Hospital Universitario del Valle in Cali, Colombia: clinical features, management and evolution.

Objective: To know the epidemiology of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in the pediatric population at Hospital Universitario del Valle (HUV), a tertiary University Hospital in Cali, Colombia.

Methods: We obtained a series of cases through daily surveillance for a seven-month period (June 1 to December 31, 2009) in patients older than 30 days and under 18 years at HUV. We excluded patients with previous diagnosis of chronic renal failure.

[Flurbiprofen: therapeutic alternative in nephritic colic].

A double blind randomized study was conducted in 52 patients with renoureteric colic to compare the therapeutic efficacy of two analgesics given in a single intramuscular dose. Following the administration of 2 gm dipirone plus 20 mg hyoscine N-butylbromide (n = 26) or 150 mg flurbiprofen (n-26), the patients were assessed for pain intensity, relief and pain status for a period of one hour. Both treatments afforded a similar analgesic effect, with pain remitting in 76.

[Conservative treatment of bladder and prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood: possibilities for non-radical surgery].

Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder and prostate has always been difficult. Despite the significant advancements that have permitted cure, there is no agreement in the choice and order of the different therapeutic options. We reviewed the available literature evaluating the role of non-radical surgery and attempts at bladder preservation especially in children.
