Dislocations of the distal radioulnar joint associated with a fracture of the distal ulna articular surface without an associated radial fracture are extremely rare. We present a case of a fracture of the distal ulna with an associated dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint, where the articular head fragment was displaced anterior to the sigmoid notch. We also present the results of a formal systematic review of these injuries which confirmed this is the first such injury described, although there is a very similar fracture pattern described in the literature with dorsal dislocation.

Three of these were progressive and required revision, and biomechanical explant analyses of these revised prostheses were performed. Ex vivo testing of the contact points of the Motec implants was also performed at maximum extension.

Membrane performance and wettability properties maintained at optimum duration and frequency of the treatments, as indicated by low permeate conductivity throughout the tests. The cleaning of the membrane using 2% NaOH by immersing the membrane for 30 min after 240 min operation removed the biofouling layer, indicated by low permeate conductivity of 370 µScm after cleaning.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOcular chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) has been shown to significantly reduce quality of life after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). To learn more about this bothersome complication, we investigated the relationship between ocular cGVHD and cGVHD in other organs. We also investigated the associations between ocular cGVHD and overall mortality, nonrelapse mortality, and relapse.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOcular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) contributes substantially to morbidity after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) but is sparsely investigated in children. We assessed incidence and risk factors for oGVHD and dry eye disease (DED) in a nationwide, single-centre study of 484 consecutive children receiving HSCT during the period 1980-2016. Ophthalmological examinations were performed before and annually at least until five years after HSCT.

Using hollow fiber membrane, the effect of operation parameters, such as feed concentration, feed temperature, and feed agitation were evaluated against the permeate flux. Following the operation parameters optimization, long-term SVMDC tests were performed using cane sugar model solution and raw sugarcane juice as the feed.

This retrospective study included 1407 consecutive adults who underwent allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Patients were examined by an ophthalmologist according to the hospital's guidelines: baseline examination before HSCT, annually up to 5 years after HSCT.

Purpose: Donor-to-host transmission of infectious agents is a rare but well-recognised complication of corneal transplantation and may carry a grave visual prognosis. In this case series, we describe the clinical features and risk factors of using culture-positive donor corneas for transplantation.
Methods: Retrospective chart review of a series of patients who underwent either penetrating keratoplasty (PK) or Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) with positive microbiology cultivation during routine assessment of donor corneal tissue obtained at the time of surgery.
Pemphigoid and pemphigus diseases as well as Stevens-Johnson syndrome present as vesiculobullous disorders of the skin and may additionally involve both the oral cavity and the ocular surface. Ocular involvement ranges from mild irritation and dry eye disease to chronic conjunctivitis, symblepharon, eyelid malposition, ocular surface scarring and severe visual loss. In addition to diagnostic assessments, ophthalmologists must treat the dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction components of these diseases using a stepladder approach, including eyelid hygiene and lubricants.

Although not recognized until during surgery, with a high index of suspicion, preoperative diagnosis of this injury combination should be possible on high resolution CT, thus enabling better planning of the procedure. The presence of a small sustentacular fragment, especially if markedly displaced or rotated, should further alert the physician as to increased likelihood of such tendon entrapment within the fracture.

Methods: By reviewing medical records from 2000 to July 2013, patients with fungal keratitis were identified.
Purpose: To overcome problems and delays of the preparation of autologous serum eye drops, a production line of ABO-specific allogeneic serum eye drops from male blood donors was set up in a blood bank. Feasibility, clinical routine, safety and efficacy were evaluated in a cohort of patients with severe ocular surface disorders.
Methods: Serum was derived from 450 ml whole-blood donations from regular male blood donors, produced and tested according to good manufacturing practice and legislation regulating blood products in Denmark.
Purpose: The developing visual cortex has a strong potential to undergo plastic changes. Little is known about the potential of the ageing visual cortex to express plasticity. A pertinent question is whether therapeutic interventions can trigger plastic changes in the ageing visual cortex by restoring vision.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe adult visual cortex maintains a substantial potential for plasticity in response to a change in visual input. For instance, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have shown that binocular deprivation (BD) increases the cortical excitability for inducing phosphenes with TMS. Here, we employed TMS to trace plastic changes in adult visual cortex before, during, and after 48 h of monocular deprivation (MD) of the right dominant eye.

Based on the experience of other centres, we report the impact of using a renal transplantation timesheet on the cold ischaemia time in our centre.
Material And Method: Since March 2004, we have used a renal transplantation timesheet with the collaboration of all personnel involved in transplantation (coordination, nephrologists, clinical pathologists).
Results are presented for numerical simulations of ground water flow and physical transport associated with a natural gradient tracer experiment conducted within a heterogeneous alluvial aquifer of the Natural Attenuation Study (NATS) site near Columbus, Mississippi. A principal goal of NATS is to evaluate biogeochemical models that predict the rate and extent of natural biodegradation under field conditions. This paper describes the initial phase in the model evaluation process, i.
