Agrochemicals used in agriculture can lead to the accumulation of harmful pollutants like heavy metals in the environment, which negatively affect both wildlife and human health.
In Bahia, Brazil, a study analyzed 326 bat hair samples to assess the bioaccumulation of manganese, lead, and copper in areas influenced by cacao agroforestry compared to more disturbed landscapes like pastures and monocultures.
Results showed that bats in disturbed areas had higher levels of lead and manganese, while cacao agroforestry increased copper exposure, emphasizing the importance of sustainable farming to protect ecosystems.
