Article Synopsis
  • * The study compared these electrodes to traditional Ag/AgCl reference electrodes, finding that while Ag/AgCl showed greater charge transfer resistance, the carbon/graphene electrodes maintained comparable sensitivity and performance when lactate oxidase was used in the setup.
  • * Future investigations are necessary to address the reduction in electric current observed with human plasma, indicating potential issues with analyte detection sensitivity due to biological interferents.

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by persistent insufficient nutritional and/or energy intake. ARFID, before referred to as "selective eating disorder", was introduced recently in the DSM-5 as a replacement for and expansion of the previous diagnosis. Individuals with ARFID may limit food variety and intake due to avoidance based on the sensory characteristics of the food or related to any adverse consequences of eating without the intention of losing weight and concerns of body image.

Objective: To evaluate the direct, indirect, and total prospective effects of serum concentrations of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25[OH]D) on depressive symptoms in older adults.

Methods: Data from the second (2013-2015) and third (2017-2019) waves of the EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study (= 60 years) were analyzed. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale.

Background: The association between obesity and depressive symptoms has been described in the literature, but there is a scarcity of longitudinal data. This study aimed to verify the association between body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference and the incidence of depressive symptoms over a 10-year follow-up in a cohort of older adults.

Methods: Data from the first (2009-2010), second (2013-2014), and third (2017-2019) waves of the EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study were used.

The identification of factors associated with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(OH)D) concentration can help suggest more specific interventions for older adults. In this cross-sectional study of older adults from southern Brazil, we hypothesized that some sociodemographic, behavioral, and health factors positively or negatively influence the 25(OH)D concentration in this population. This analysis was performed using data from the second wave of the EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study (2013-2015).

Objective: To estimate the association between vitamin D and the cognitive decline of older adults and evaluate whether this association is mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) serum concentration.

Methods: Cross-sectional study nested in a population-based cohort. Of the 604 participants in the complementary examination of the EpiFloripa Study, 576 older adults (60 years or older) were eligible for the study.

This study aimed to verify the association between the consumption of omega-3-rich (n-3) fish and depressive symptoms in older adults living in Southern Brazil. This is a cross-sectional analysis with data from the second wave of the EpiFloripa Aging cohort study (2013/2014) including 1,130 individuals aged 60 years or older. The presence of depressive symptoms was measured by the 15-items Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and the consumption of n-3-rich fish by a question of weekly frequency.

Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review evaluates the impact of the ketogenic diet (KD) on cognitive function in children and adults with pharmacoresistant epilepsy, which affects both neurological health and quality of life.
  • Out of 24 studies reviewed, 19 reported improvements in cognitive function linked to KD, while a few showed mixed results, indicating the need for standardized methods of assessing cognition.
  • The review concludes that there is insufficient evidence to confirm the KD's benefits on cognitive function, calling for more rigorous research with larger, more consistent participant groups and better study designs.

Purpose: Despite recent advancements in the treatment of depression, the prevalence of affected individuals continues to grow. The development of new strategies has been required and emerging evidence has linked a possible antidepressant effect with dietary interventions. In this review, we discuss recent findings about the possible antidepressant effect of dietary interventions with an emphasis on the results of randomized controlled trials.

Studies have found that physical activity (PA) could be a protective factor and adiposity a risk factor for low serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(OH)D) concentration. This cross-sectional study hypothesized that PA could have a direct effect on 25(OH)D, and adiposity could be a mediating factor. Data from the second wave of the EpiFloripa Aging longitudinal study, collected during 2013 and 2014 (n = 1197) in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, was used.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in children and associated risk factors.

Design: Analysis of data from a cross-sectional multicentre study performed in the primary care units of the municipalities from January to June 2015. The children's legal guardians answered a socio-economic questionnaire, and the children's blood samples were obtained by venipuncture.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal used as raw material for several fertilizers and pesticides. The increase of Cd concentration in soils has been observed in cultivated areas, affecting animals, plants, and microorganisms. Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus is a plant growth-promoting bacterium able to survive under adverse environmental conditions.

Depression is a mental disorder triggered by the interaction of social, psychological and biological factors that have an important impact on an individual's life. Despite being a well-studied disease with several established forms of treatment, its prevalence is increasing, especially among older adults. New forms of treatment and prevention are encouraged, and some researchers have been discussing the effects of vitamin D (VitD) on depression; however, the exact mechanism by which VitD exerts its effects is not yet conclusive.

Objective: To investigate the association between serum vitamin D (25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol) (25(OH)D) concentrations and cognitive impairment in older adults living in Southern Brazil.

Design: Cross-sectional analysis using data from the second follow-up wave of the populational-based EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study was collected in 2013-2014.

Setting: Cognitive impairment was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).

Context: Migraine is a headache of variable intensity that is associated with focal and systemic symptoms. A ketogenic diet (KD), a very-low-carbohydrate diet with a proportional increase in fat, causes brain metabolic alterations, which could be beneficial for some neurologic conditions.

Objective: A systematic review was conducted to assess the efficacy and tolerability of KD in preventing migraine in adolescents and adults.

Sugar-rich environments represent an important challenge for microorganisms. The osmotic and molecular imbalances resulting from this condition severely limit microbial metabolism and growth. Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus is one of the most sugar-tolerant prokaryotes, able to grow in the presence of sucrose concentrations up to 30%.

Lactate is an important organic molecule that is produced in excess during anaerobic metabolism when oxygen is absent in the human organism. The concentration of this substance in the body can be related to several medical conditions, such as hemorrhage, respiratory failure, and ischemia. Herein, we describe a graphene-based lactate biosensor to detect the concentrations of L-lactic acid in different fluids (buffer solution and plasma).

The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria represents an alternative to the massive use of mineral fertilizers in agriculture. However, some abiotic stresses commonly found in the environment, like salinity, can affect the efficiency of this approach. Here, we investigated the key mechanisms involved in the response of the plant growth-promoting bacterium Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus to salt stress by using morphological and cell viability analyses, comparative proteomics, and reverse genetics.

Hygienic and sanitary measures and social distancing policies implemented during the new coronavirus disease - COVID-19 - pandemic have altered the care and follow-up provided by healthcare professionals for patients with chronic diseases, including patients with epilepsy (PWEs). Telemedicine has become a solution for the healthcare of PWEs in many developed countries. In this short communication, we trace a particular perspective for the application of telemedicine for PWEs undergoing ketogenic diet (KD) treatment, considering the social and economic difficulties faced by healthcare teams in resource-poor countries, such as Brazil.
