Population screening for colorectal cancer in Spain - A public health success with remaining challenges.

The development of organized colorectal cancer screening programs in developed countries has led to a reduction in the incidence and mortality of this cancer. The implementation of the national screening program in Spain represents a major achievement in public health, aligning us with other European countries, but it still faces ongoing challenges. One of the main issues is the low participation rate of the eligible population, averaging 45%, with significant variation between autonomous communities.

Effect of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on colorectal cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

Background And Study Aims: Our aim was to determine the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC).

Patients And Methods: This prospective cohort study included individuals diagnosed with CRC between March 13, 2019 and June 20, 2021 across 21 Spanish hospitals. Two time periods were compared: prepandemic (from March 13, 2019 to March 13, 2020) and pandemic (from March 14, 2020 to June 20, 2021, lockdown period and 1 year after lockdown).

Effectiveness and safety of a third-line rescue treatment for acute severe ulcerative colitis refractory to infliximab or ciclosporin (REASUC study).

Background: The advent of new therapeutic agents and the improvement of supporting care might change the management of acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) and avoid colectomy.

Aims: To evaluate the colectomy-free survival and safety of a third-line treatment in patients with ASUC refractory to intravenous steroids and who failed either infliximab or ciclosporin.

Methods: Multicentre retrospective cohort study of patients with ASUC refractory to intravenous steroids who had failed infliximab or ciclosporin and received a third-line treatment during the same hospitalisation.

Serological response and breakthrough infection after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with cirrhosis and post-liver transplant.

Background: Vaccine hesitancy and lack of access remain major issues in disseminating COVID-19 vaccination to liver patients globally. Factors predicting poor response to vaccination and risk of breakthrough infection are important data to target booster vaccine programs. The primary aim of the current study was to measure humoral responses to 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Safe use of proton-pump inhibitors.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed drug groups in developed countries. Their approved indications include gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, and prophylaxis against NSAID-induced gastroenteropathy in specific scenarios. Since their introduction into clinical practice, their usage has significantly increased, leading to concerns about possible inappropriate prescribing, which can result in a higher risk of side effects and increased economic costs.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and graft-versus-host disease.

We present the case of a 59-year-old man with acute myeloid leukemia treated with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Two years later, he consulted for diarrhea and steatorrhea of 2-3 months of evolution with significant weight loss. Stool cultures and study of parasites were negative.
