Plants, as sessile organisms, face the crucial challenge of adjusting growth and development with ever-changing environmental conditions. Protein synthesis is the fundamental process that enables growth of all organisms. Since elevated temperature presents a substantial threat to protein stability and function, immediate adjustments of protein synthesis rates are necessary to circumvent accumulation of proteotoxic stress and to ensure survival.

The concept of physical literacy (PL) has witnessed enormous popularity in recent years and has undergone substantial theoretical evolvement during the last 2 decades. However, the research field pertaining to PL has not yet initiated discussions around the challenges of climate change and the alignment with conceptualizations of planetary health. Therefore, we argue that the consideration of an "ecological domain" for individual physical activity, in the form of ecological awareness, would further evolve the concept.

SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in widespread awareness of health workers' work realities and their mental health impacts, and corresponding unprecedented research effort. Reviews of the quantitative literature on mental health of clinical skilled healthcare personnel in low- and lower-middle income countries (LLMIC), however, point at quality issues in the pre-pandemic literature. We used the evidence generated in the context of one pre-pandemic review to understand methodological strengths and weaknesses in detail, with the aim of distilling recommendations for future research.

Background: Burkina Faso has been implementing financing reforms towards universal health coverage (UHC) since 2006. Recently, the country introduced a performance-based financing (PBF) program as well as user fee removal (gratuité) policy for health services aimed at pregnant and lactating women and children under 5. We aim to assess the effect of and PBF policies on facility-based out-of-pocket expenditures (OOPEs) for outpatient services.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal mortality is still a major issue in low-income countries, but high-quality antenatal care (ANC) can help mitigate this by reducing complications for mothers and newborns.
  • This study in rural Burkina Faso assessed the effectiveness of a performance-based financing (PBF) scheme aimed at enhancing ANC quality by comparing intervention and control districts.
  • While the PBF scheme increased facilities' readiness to provide ANC services, it didn't significantly improve the quality of clinical care or preventive measures, suggesting that stronger incentives are necessary to elevate patient care outcomes.

Access to safe, effective, and affordable essential medicines (EM) is critical to quality health services and as such has played a key role in innovative health system strengthening approaches such as Performance-based Financing (PBF). Available literature indicates that PBF can improve EM availability, but has not done so consistently in the past. Qualitative explorations of the reasons are yet scarce.

The important role of translational control for maintenance of proteostasis is well documented in plants, but the exact mechanisms that coordinate translation rates during plant development and stress response are not well understood. In Arabidopsis, the translation elongation complex eEF1B consists of three subunits: eEF1Bα, eEF1Bβ, and eEF1Bγ. While eEF1Bα and eEF1Bβ have a conserved GDP/GTP exchange function, the function of eEF1Bγ is still unknown.

Objectives: In Burkina Faso, only 2.1% of women give birth by caesarean section (CS). To improve the use of maternal health services during pregnancy and childbirth, many interventions were implemented during the 2010s including performance-based financing (PBF) and a free maternal health care policy (the gratuité).

The coordination of cell division with stress response is essential for maintaining genome stability in plant meristems. Proteins involved in pre-mRNA splicing are important for these processes in animal and human cells. Based on its homology to the splicing factor SART1, which is implicated in the control of cell division and genome stability in human cells, we analyzed if MDF has similar functions in plants.

In recent years, performance-based financing (PBF) has attracted attention as a means of reforming provider payment mechanisms in low- and middle-income countries. Particularly in combination with demand-side interventions, PBF has been assumed to benefit also the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. However, impact evaluations have often found this not to be the case.

Physical education teacher educators' health-related beliefs can impact public health. An interactive knowledge-to-action approach, such as Cooperative Planning, might challenge the health-related beliefs of physical education teacher educators, thus contributing to innovation in teacher education. We investigated what health-related beliefs physical education teacher educators had before a Cooperative Planning intervention, how these developed throughout the intervention and how teacher educators' perceptions of Cooperative Planning can explain the identified changes and continuities.

Background: Accurate measurement of mental health disorders in conflict-affected populations is crucial for improving mental health care for these populations. Most studies to develop mental health questionnaires for conflict-affected populations are conducted in high income countries despite the vast majority of conflict-affected populations residing in Low and Middle Income Countries (LAMICs). The aim of this systematic review is to assess the quality of questionnaires for mental disorders that have been either developed or validated in conflict- affected settings in LAMICs.

A knowledgeable and motivated workforce is critical for health systems to provide high-quality services. Many low- and middle-income countries face shortages in human resources and low health worker motivation but are also home to a burgeoning number of quality improvement (QI) programmes. This study evaluates whether and how motivation and clinical knowledge in three cadres of health workers changed in the context of a QI programme for maternal and newborn health in Ethiopia.

Background: Countries in Africa progressively implement performance-based financing schemes to improve the quality of care provided by maternal, newborn and child health services. Beyond its direct effects on service provision, evidence suggests that performance-based financing can also generate positive externalities on service utilization, such as increased use of those services that reached higher quality standards after effective scheme implementation. Little, however, is known about externalities generated within non-incentivized health services, such as positive or negative effects on the quality of services within the continuum of maternal care.

Galactose oxidases (GalOxs) are well-known enzymes that have been identified in several fungal species and characterized using structural and enzymatic approaches. However, until very recently, almost no information on their biological functions was available. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) gene ruby particles in mucilage (RUBY) encodes a putative plant GalOx that is required for pectin cross-linking through modification of galactose (Gal) side chains and promotes cell-cell adhesion between seed coat epidermal cells.
