Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training.

The impact of patient ethnicity on haematopoietic cell transplantation outcome: a retrospective cohort study on the UK experience.

Background: Patient ethnicity has been correlated with different outcomes after haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), with patients from minority ethnic backgrounds reported to have worse outcomes compared with White patients. To date, studies have been predominantly done in the USA, where health-care models are different to many European countries, including the UK. We aimed to evaluate the impact of patient-reported ethnicity on autologous and allogeneic HCT outcomes in the UK.

Health-related quality of life in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia: examining agreement between child self-report and parent proxy.

Unlabelled: Premature children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) encounter several health issues potentially affecting their health-related quality of life (HRQL). We aimed to determine agreement between children with BPD and their parent's HRQL assessments. Using Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) assessment tools, we evaluated agreement and potential bias between parent proxy and child self-reports of the PROMIS-Scale-Global Health-7, the Psychological Stress Experiences Short Form (PSE), and the PROMIS-Profile-25.

Background: A prenylated flavonoid, broussoflavonol F (BFF), was isolated from Macaranga genus with cytotoxicities against various cancer cells, though its underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated.

Hypothesis: This study aimed to investigate the anti-tumor and anti-angiogenesis activities of BFF and its underlying mechanisms in colon cancer.

Method: In the in vitro study, the cytotoxic effects of BFF in human colon cancer HCT-116 and LoVo cells were examined using MTT assay, BrdU assay and colony formation assay.

A clinical swallow evaluation (CSE) is a noninvasive and indirect assessment of the anatomical and physiological integrity of the swallowing mechanism in a natural setting. A CSE goes beyond a screening, a dichotomized indicator of dysphagia risk, by comprehensively examining the patient's swallowing through gaining sensory and motor information of oral and pharyngeal function. Information obtained from CSEs in combination with medical, social, and environmental patient related factors allow clinicians to make critical decisions about patients' health and quality of life.

Ambient smoke exposure and indoor air quality in eastern Massachusetts during the 2023 wildfire season.

Widespread North American wildfires in 2023 led to exposure to ambient wildfire smoke outside of traditionally wildfire-prone regions. The objective was to evaluate levels of indoor air pollutants in relation to ambient wildfire smoke exposure in eastern Massachusetts. Using a real-time multipollutant sensor system in five Boston area households, this study assessed indoor fine particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO), and total volatile organic compound concentrations (TVOC) two days before and during days of hazardous wildfire smoke exposure (smoke days).

Comparison of home-based spirometry and oscillometry measurements in school-age children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Introduction: This study compares home-based oscillometry and spirometry for characterizing respiratory system disease in school-aged children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in clinical research. We hypothesized higher rates of successful completion and abnormal cases identified through oscillometry, with correlations between device measurements.

Methods: Participants 6-12 years old with BPD in the ongoing Air Quality, Environment and Respiratory Outcomes in BPD (AERO-BPD) study performed oscillometry followed by spirometry at two separate home visits.

Background: Nutritional prehabilitation may improve haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) outcomes, although little evidence exists. The present study aimed to understand healthcare professional (HCP) perceptions of prehabilitation and nutritional care pre-HCT in UK centres.

Methods: An anonymous online survey (developed and refined via content experts and piloting) was administered via email to multidisciplinary HCPs in 39 UK adult centres, between July 2021 and June 2022.

Artificial intelligence in shoulder and elbow surgery: overview of current and future applications.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is amongst the most rapidly growing technologies in orthopedic surgery. With the exponential growth in healthcare data, computing power, and complex predictive algorithms, this technology is poised to aid providers in data processing and clinical decision support throughout the continuum of orthopedic care. Understanding the utility and limitations of this technology is vital to practicing orthopedic surgeons, as these applications will become more common place in everyday practice.

Distal biceps reconstruction: a long-term follow-up of the complications and durability of the single-incision power optimizing cost-effective (SPOC) repair.

Background: The Single-Incision Power Optimizing Cost-Effective Repair (SPOC) method reattaches the distal biceps tendon to its original posterior anatomic footprint and utilizes the anterior cortex of the supinated radius for fixation. The purpose of the study was to define the long-term complications and durability of the SPOC method.

Methods: Two hundred and eighteen patients underwent the SPOC repair of distal biceps ruptures from 2008 to 2020, with 185 having at least 1-year follow-up data.

From ToyBox Study to eToyBox: Advancing Childhood Obesity Reduction in Malaysian Kindergartens.

Prevention and treatment of childhood obesity is a global concern, and in Malaysia, it is considered a national public health priority. Determinants of childhood obesity are multifactorial and include factors that directly and indirectly influence energy balance-related behaviours, including energy intake and energy expenditure. Interventions to address childhood obesity that have multiple components at different levels have been shown to be the most influential.

Design, Synthesis, and Structure-Activity Relationships of Biaryl Anilines as Subtype-Selective PPAR-alpha Agonists.

The role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) in retinal biology is clarifying, and evidence demonstrates that novel PPARα agonists hold promising therapeutic utility for diseases like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Herein, we disclose the design and initial structure-activity relationships for a new biaryl aniline PPARα agonistic chemotype. Notably, this series exhibits subtype selectivity for PPARα over other isoforms, a phenomenon postulated to be due to the unique benzoic acid headgroup.

Benchmarking of survival outcomes following Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT): an update of the ongoing project of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and Joint Accreditation Committee of ISCT and EBMT (JACIE).

From 2016 EBMT and JACIE developed an international risk-adapted benchmarking program of haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) outcome to provide individual EBMT Centers with a means of quality-assuring the HSCT process and meeting FACT-JACIE accreditation requirements relating to 1-year survival outcomes. Informed by previous experience from Europe, North America and Australasia, the Clinical Outcomes Group (COG) established criteria for patient and Center selection, and a set of key clinical variables within a dedicated statistical model adapted to the capabilities of the EBMT Registry. The first phase of the project was launched in 2019 to test the acceptability of the benchmarking model through assessment of Centers' performance for 1-year data completeness and survival outcomes of autologous and allogeneic HSCT covering 2013-2016.

Distribution and clinical features of lymphomas involving skin in Taiwan.

A wide variety of primary and secondary lymphoma types involves the skin. However, reports with comparisons between both groups are limited in Taiwan. We retrospectively enrolled all cutaneous lymphomas and evaluated their clinicopathologic features.

Environment and the development of severe asthma in inner city population.

Purpose Of Review: Higher asthma prevalence and morbidity are seen in inner-city areas, disproportionately affecting low-income families living in substandard housing. Children within these families experience more frequent asthma exacerbations, acute care and emergency department visits, and hospitalizations, thus characterizing severe asthma. In this review, we assess recent published literature focused on indoor and outdoor exposures that contribute to the development and morbidity of asthma.
