Objective: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) and high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) are associated with the highest risk of VTE among patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Tissue factor (TF) is a transmembrane glycoprotein which can trigger thrombosis. We sought to evaluate if there is an association between VTE and tumor expression of tissue factor (TF), plasma TF, and microvesicle TF (MV TF) activity in this high-risk population.

Objective: Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms causes a high morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. Platelet-rich thrombi form on the surface of aneurysms and may contribute to disease progression. In this study, we used a pharmacological approach to examine a role of platelets in established aneurysms induced by angiotensin II infusion into hypercholesterolemic mice.

Hepatocyte (HPC) apoptosis occurs in association with hepatotoxic responses and chronic liver disease, and is coupled to activation of the blood coagulation cascade. HPCs have been shown to express tissue factor (TF), the primary activator of blood coagulation, in a form that lacks procoagulant activity. In this study, we determined the effect of inducing HPC apoptosis on the procoagulant activity of TF.

The blood coagulation cascade is essential for haemostasis, but excessive activation can cause thrombosis. Importantly, recent studies have identified factors that contribute to thrombosis but not haemostasis. These include factor XII (FXII), tissue factor-positive microparticles (MPs) and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs).

Patients with cancer have an increased risk for venous thrombosis. Interestingly, different cancer types have different rates of thrombosis, with pancreatic cancer having one of the highest rates. However, the mechanisms responsible for the increase in venous thrombosis in patients with cancer are not understood.

Cancer patients often have an activated clotting system and are at increased risk for venous thrombosis. In the present study, we analyzed tissue factor (TF) expression in 4 different human pancreatic tumor cell lines for the purpose of producing derivative tumors in vivo. We found that 2 of the lines expressed TF and released TF-positive microparticles (MPs) into the culture medium.
