Background: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is recommended to women with a pathogenic BRCA variant, but as a main side effect, RRSO could lead to an early onset of menopause.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of RRSO and preoperative menopausal status on menopausal symptoms, sexual functioning, and quality of life (QOL).

Methods: The study was conducted between November 2019 and April 2020.

Progestogens are frequently administered during early pregnancy to patients undergoing assisted reproductive techniques (ART) to overcome progesterone deficits following ART procedures. Orally administered dydrogesterone (DG) shows equal efficacy to other progestogens with a higher level of patient compliance. However, potential harmful effects of DG on critical pregnancy processes and on the health of the progeny are not yet completely ruled out.

Objective: To demonstrate the quality of a combined vaginal-abdominal surgical approach to rectovaginal endometriosis by analyzing long-term outcome and recurrence rates.

Methods: In a prospective cohort study in Berlin, Germany, women with endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum were enrolled between September 2004 and December 2012. Bowel infiltration was verified intraoperatively and treated by a nerve-sparing, mesentery-preserving vaginal-abdominal operative approach.

Objective: Rectovaginal endometriosis has the potential to infiltrate into the rectal wall. The recognition of infiltration prior to surgery is of utmost importance since only infiltrative disease should be treated by partial or complete rectal resection. This study compares different imaging procedures in rectovaginal endometriosis cases in an everyday clinical setting.

The role of neurotrophins in eutopic endometrium from endometriosis-patients was investigated in a prospective study using immunofluorescence-staining, Western blot and a neuronal growth assay. The nerve growth factor is expressed in primary endometrial cell culture from women with and without endometriosis. Western blot analysis of endometrial biopsies or uterine fluid from patients with and without endometriosis shows no difference in the neurotrophin expression.

Purpose: To investigate the influence of different kinds of endometriotic lesions, especially peritoneal endometriotic implants in pain generation and the pain reduction after surgical excision in a prospective study.

Methods: Fifty-one pre-menopausal patients underwent surgical laparoscopy due to chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea and/or for ovarian cysts. In 44 patients, endometriosis was diagnosed.

Purpose: To established a strategy for diagnostic and therapeutic management of umbilical endometriosis and to determine the biological character.

Methods: Clinical examination, vaginal and abdominal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging of the abdominal wall and laparoscopy were performed on a 42-year-old woman with umbilical endometriosis. Surgery with umbilical reconstruction was performed by a new plastic surgery technique.

Design: Prospective nonrandomized study.

Setting: University hospital endometriosis center.

Background: A new combined vaginal-laparoscopic-abdominal approach for rectovaginal endometriosis allows intraoperative digital bowel palpation to assess bowel infiltration and prevents unnecessary bowel resections. This technique was compared to various established approaches where bowel resection was indicated by clinical symptoms and imaging results only.

Methods: Patients operated for rectovaginal endometriosis with endometriotic bowel involvement between March 2002 and April 2006 at the gynecological department Charité, Berlin, Germany were included.

The medical treatment of endometriosis needs to be optimized. Therapeutic management strategies for endometriosis-associated pain or recurrent disease are primarily aimed at downregulating ovarian function or antagonizing the effect of estrogen in ectopic endometrial implants. In this context, basic research is providing important results for the development of new, specific treatment modalities.

Design: Retrospective nonrandomized study.

Setting: University hospital endometriosis research center.

Danazol, an inhibitor of pituitary gonadotropin with weak androgenic effect, is currently being used for the treatment of endometriosis. In contrast to other C17 alkylated anabolic steroids, it has been rarely associated with the occurrence of primary liver tumors. We present the case of a patient with endometriosis in whom a hepatocellular adenoma was discovered after 14 years of treatment with danazol for endometriosis.
