Fatal colchicine poisoning by accidental ingestion of meadow saffron-case report.

A 62-year-old male died of colchicine poisoning after accidental ingestion of Colchicum autumnale (meadow saffron). He ate a salad of plant with green leaves regarded as wild garlic (Allium ursinum). A few hours later he developed symptoms of gastroenteritis and was admitted to hospital.

Reliability and factorial validity of squat and countermovement jump tests.

The primary aim of this study was to determine reliability and factorial validity of squat (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests. The secondary aim was to compare 3 popular methods for the estimation of vertical jumping height. Physical education students (n = 93) performed 7 explosive power tests: 5 different vertical jumps (Sargent jump, Abalakow's jump with arm swing and without arm swing, SJ, and CMJ) and 2 horizontal jumps (standing long jump and standing triple jump).

Radioprotective and antitumor activity evaluation of newly synthesized adamantyl tenocyclidines.

Several adamantyl derivatives of thienyl phencyclidine (tenocyclidine; TCP) were newly sythesized and characterized: adamantyl derivatives containing piperidine (TAPIP), pyrrolidine (TAPYR), and morpholine (TAMORPH) groups. Their biological activity was evaluated by in vitro testing of their effect on the proliferative and reproductive ability (cytotoxicity) of a human tumor cell strain and nonmalignant mouse fibroblasts in culture. We also tested them for their radioprotective effect after ionizing irradiation, and as anticancer agents on the same human tumor cell strain.

Acute myocardial infarction: differing preinfarction and clinical features according to infarct site and gender.

While differences between anterior and inferior acute myocardial infarction have been observed, clinical features of lateral infarction are poorly investigated. However, the impact of gender on clinical course and prognosis after myocardial infarction is not fully understood. Electrocardiographically determined infarct site, demographic and clinical variables were prospectively recorded for 1623 consecutive patients admitted to Clinical Hospital Split between 1990 and 1994 due to a first Q-wave acute myocardial infarction.

Autoimmune blistering skin diseases in childhood.

Autoimmune blistering skin disease in childhood are a heterogeneous group of diseases, which vary in presentation, clinical course, pathohistology, immunopathology and treatment. Although these diseases are rare, it is very important to make an accurate diagnosis based on a combination of clinical signs and laboratory findings. A short review is given of the most common childhood autoimmune bullous diseases according to the clinical, pathohistologic and immunopathologic picture and as well as treatment recommendations.

Adamantyl tenocyclidines--adjuvant therapy in poisoning with organophosphorus compounds and carbamates.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of thienyl phencyclidine (tenocyclidine, TCP) and its newly synthesized adamantyl derivatives containing piperidine (TAPIP), pyrolidine (TAPIR) and morpholine (TAMORF) groups, which were tested with or without standard therapy in mice poisoned with organophosphates (OPs) and carbamates. These compounds with potential activity at the N-methyl- D-aspartate and muscarinic receptors showed low acute toxicity, having LD50 values varying from 106.00 mg/kg (TCP) to >504.

Analysis of changes in indicators of functional and motor readiness of female basketball players within one-year training cycles.

The basic goal of this work was the evaluation of functional and motor preparedness of 13 top female basketball players during a one-year training cycle. Across of the six time points the preparedness of subjects was measured by means of a twelve-test battery measuring the basic and specific motor and functional abilities. The experimental training program was the yearly training macrocycle with all its components and duration.

[What we can learn from refusal of transfusion therapy from experience with Jehovah's Witnesses].

Patients who refuse blood transfusion for personal or religious reasons present complex medical, legal and moral problems. Blood transfusion has been doctrinally forbidden for Jehovah's Witnesses since 1945. Their refusal is based on the strict interpretation of several Biblical passages.

Identification of the contents and the shelf-life of indicator tubes from field kits for detection of organophosphorus compounds in the air.

Indicator tubes from field kits for detection of organophosphorus compounds in the air were found on the territory of Croatia, in barracks liberated during the war years of 1991/1992, and were analysed during 1993/95. The detection kit consisted of glass indicator tubes with two sealed vials within each tube, a device for opening the tubes and breaking the vials, and an air sampling pump. The tubes were marked with serial numbers and expiry dates (1974-1992), but the description as to their contents was unavailable.
