Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), commonly known as Long COVID, represents a significant and complex health challenge with a wide range of symptoms affecting multiple organ systems. This review examines the emerging evidence suggesting a critical role of the gut and gut-brain axis in the pathophysiology of Long COVID. It explores how changes in the gut microbiome, disruption of gut barrier integrity, and the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 antigens within the gastrointestinal tract may contribute to the prolonged and varied symptoms seen in Long COVID, including chronic inflammation and neuropsychiatric disturbances.

Introduction: Inflammation is a marker of immune activation. Inflammation may have an effect on both ovarian function and luteal function, both essential to pregnancy. High inflammation may also signal dysregulated processes within the ovary, which could be in part measured through Anti-Müllerian hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and inhibin B levels.

Background: Associations between early-life menstrual cycle characteristics (MCC) and gestational diabetes (GDM) remain unclear.

Objectives: To evaluate associations between early-life MCCs and GDM in first pregnancy, across pregnancies and its recurrence.

Methods: This analysis included participants from a US-based digital cohort enrolled between 11/2019 and 9/2023 who provided consent, completed relevant surveys, were without diabetes and aged ≥18 at first pregnancy (n = 30,473).

Otolith organs in the inner ear and neuromasts in the fish lateral-line harbor two populations of hair cells oriented to detect stimuli in opposing directions. The underlying mechanism is highly conserved: the transcription factor EMX2 is regionally expressed in just one hair cell population and acts through the receptor GPR156 to reverse cell orientation relative to the other population. In mouse and zebrafish, loss of Emx2 results in sensory organs that harbor only one hair cell orientation and are not innervated properly.

The most recent vitamin D data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) have not been examined. We used data from NHANES to describe trends in 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] from 2011 to 2018 and for the most recent cycle (2017-2018) to identify groups with lower levels of 25(OH)D and factors predictive of 25(OH)D. The 31,628 participants were weighted to represent the entire U.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the prevalence of androgen excess (AE) symptoms in 24,435 participants from a U.S. digital cohort, focusing on signs like hirsutism, chin hair, hair loss, and acne from November 2019 to December 2022.
  • Results revealed that possible hirsutism was at 6.9%, chin hair at 12.6%, hair loss at 1.7%, and moderate to severe acne at 31.8%, with variations noted across different age groups and demographics.
  • The findings suggest that AE symptoms differ by age, ethnicity, and body mass index, indicating the need for more inclusive health evaluations in diverse populations.

Background: While it is known that vital signs and behaviors change during pregnancy, there is limited data on timing and scale of changes for sensor-derived health metrics across pregnancy and postpartum. Wearable technology provides an opportunity to understand physiologic and behavioral changes across pregnancy with greater detail, more frequent measurements, and improved accuracy. The aim of this study is to describe changes in physiologic and behavioral sensor-based health metrics during pregnancy and postpartum in the Apple Women's Health Study (AWHS) and their relationship to demographic factors.

Hair cells of the inner ear and lateral-line system rely on specialized ribbon synapses to transmit sensory information to the central nervous system. The molecules required to assemble these synapses are not fully understood. We show that Nrxn3, a presynaptic adhesion molecule, is crucial for ribbon-synapse maturation in hair cells.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review explores how vitamin D may interact with toxic metals during pregnancy through mechanisms like nephrotoxicity, absorption, endocrine disruption, and oxidative stress.
  • - Limited studies indicate that higher vitamin D levels early in pregnancy could lead to lower toxic metal levels later, but a trial with pregnant women showed mixed results regarding vitamin D supplementation.
  • - There is a need for more research to determine the true relationship and effects of vitamin D on toxic metal exposure, as nutritional interventions could potentially help prevent negative health outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Early menarche is linked to negative health outcomes, and trends in the US show it's happening earlier, but more research is needed on how factors like socioeconomic status and BMI impact this.
  • The study aims to analyze trends in age at menarche and how long it takes to achieve regular menstrual cycles while considering early-life BMI's role as a mediator.
  • Data from 71,341 female participants reveal that the average age of menarche decreased over the decades, with a notable increase in cases of early and very early menarche.

Background: Metabolic disorders and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have captured the globe during Westernisation of lifestyle and related dietary habits over the last decades. Both disease entities are characterised by complex and heterogeneous clinical spectra linked to distinct symptoms and organ systems which, on a first glimpse, do not have many commonalities in clinical practice. However, experimental studies indicate a common backbone of inflammatory mechanisms in metabolic diseases and gut inflammation, and emerging clinical evidence suggests an intricate interplay between metabolic disorders and IBD.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that causes irregular menstrual cycles and is linked to cardiovascular and metabolic issues, but more research is needed on its specific relationships and interventions.
  • The study aimed to analyze how PCOS, time to menstrual regularity from menarche, and irregular cycles impact the occurrence of various cardiometabolic conditions in participants using the Apple Research app.
  • The research involved a large group of US-based individuals, finding that 12.3% had PCOS, with a focus on various cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes, while also considering how lifestyle factors may influence these associations.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as the most common liver disease worldwide in recent years. MASLD commonly presents as simple hepatic steatosis, but ~25% of patients develop liver inflammation, progressive fibrosis, liver cirrhosis and related hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver inflammation and the degree of fibrosis are key determinants of the prognosis.

Introduction: Lacrimal gland prolapse (LGP) is a term used to describe a benign, anterior displacement of the lacrimal gland. If this condition is not properly addressed during upper blepharoplasty, the aesthetic and functional results are less than optimal. This study aimed to report the surgical outcomes of upper blepharoplasty combined with dacryoadenopexy in patients with LGP.

The aim of the study was to assess the clinical utility of currently available pharmacogenomic (PGx) tools compared with treatment as usual (TAU), using a meta-analysis of dichotomous and continuous antidepressant efficacy and tolerability data from previously published clinical trials. MEDLINE, clinicaltrial.gov, EU Clinical Trials Register, WHO ICTRP and CENTRAL were systematically searched; of the 962 results originally reviewed, 15 trials were included.

Vitamin D status has been inconsistently associated with ovarian reserve and menopause. We used data from the Sister Study cohort to examine the associations of vitamin D supplement use, total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) level, and calcium supplement use with the timing of natural menopause. Vitamin D and calcium supplement use were assessed on a questionnaire at baseline (mean age: 46) and two follow-up time points, and characterized in multiple ways based on type, dose, and duration of use.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs), membrane-bound particles containing a variety of RNA types, DNA, proteins, and other macromolecules, are now appreciated as an important means of communication between cells and tissues, both in normal cellular physiology and as a potential indicator of cellular stress, environmental exposures, and early disease pathogenesis. Extracellular signaling through EVs is a growing field of research for understanding fundamental mechanisms of health and disease and for the potential for biomarker discovery and therapy development. EVs are also known to play important roles in mediating the effects of exposure to environmental stress.
