Hospital waste management often classifies all waste, including uncontaminated plastic packaging, as hazardous, leading to incineration as the primary treatment method. While effective for safe treatment, incineration incurs high costs and significant environmental impacts. This study explores an alternative approach through the segregation and sustainable management of plastic packaging waste derived from medical device use to mitigate these environmental consequences.

Water security remains a critical issue given the looming threats of industrial pollution, necessitating comprehensive assessments of water quality to address seasonal fluctuations and influential factors while formulating effective strategies for decision makers. This study introduces a novel approach for evaluating water quality within a complex riverine zone in South Korea: Han River that encompasses five river streams situated at each junction of North and South streams (including Gyeongan Stream) that ultimately leading towards Paldang Lake. By utilizing the monthly water characteristic data from the year 2013-2022 across 14 different locations, the significant seasonal trends and potential influences on water quality are identified.

Biomass waste-derived engineered biochar for CO capture presents a viable route for climate change mitigation and sustainable waste management. However, optimally synthesizing them for enhanced performance is time- and labor-intensive. To address these issues, we devise an active learning strategy to guide and expedite their synthesis with improved CO adsorption capacities.

The myriad consumption of plastic regularly, environmental impact and health disquietude of humans are at high risk. Along the line, international cooperation on a global scale is epitomized to mitigate the environmental threats from plastic usage, not limited to implementing international cooperation strategies and policies. Here, this study aims to provide explicit insight into possible cooperation strategies between countries on the post-treatment and management of plastic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study tackles challenges in removing nitrogen from wastewater due to the growth of certain bacteria.
  • It uses a combination of partial nitritation (PN) and air-lift granular unit (AGU) technology to improve nitrogen removal efficiency in wastewater treatment plants.
  • Results indicate that the model used for PN in a sequential batch reactor closely matched actual measurements, showing promising calibration and performance in nitrogen removal over time.

The spatial and temporal variability of renewable energy resources, particularly wind energy, should be statistically evaluated to achieve sustainable economic development to mitigate climate change. In this study, a non-Gaussian multivariate statistical monitoring approach is proposed to investigate the wind speed frequencies across different regions of South Korea. Anemometer data were first collected in 11 different provinces of South Korea with hourly resolution for one year.
