Most living shoreline site selection and design decision support tools are based upon existing environmental conditions. We developed a web-based, geospatial tool called Future Shorelines that integrates high-resolution landscape elevation data and a matrix of locally derived NOAA Interagency Sea Level Rise Scenarios to characterize future conditions of submergence and shoreline translation induced by sea level rise. Once the practitioner selects a location of interest, sea level rise scenario (e.

In order to identify novel antiviral compounds, the antiviral activity of eight plants indigenous to the southern region of Hungary against herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) was investigated. The plant extracts and the plant compound carnosic acid were tested for their effectiveness on both the extracellular and intracellular forms of HSV-2 on Vero and HeLa cells.

Since in other settings, the bioisosteric replacement of the 1,2,4-triazole moiety with imidazole resulted in significantly more efficient GP inhibitors, in silico calculations using Glide molecular docking along with unbound state DFT calculations were performed on -(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-arylimidazole-carboxamides, revealing their potential for strong GP inhibition. The syntheses of the target compounds involved the formation of an amide bond between per--acetylated β-d-glucopyranosylamine and the corresponding arylimidazole-carboxylic acids.

We aimed to characterize the relationship and time dependency of microcirculatory and mitochondrial functions in a rodent model of intraabdominal sepsis. Fecal peritonitis was induced in rats, and multi-organ failure (MOF) was evaluated 12, 16, 20, 24 or 28 h later (n = 8/group, each) using rat-specific organ failure assessment (ROFA) scores.

However, its association with hyperlipidemia is contradictory. To date, serum SDF-1 and its correlations with lipid fractions and subfractions in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) have not been investigated.

The effect of its headgroup-headgroup interactions on thermochromism such as pH or salt concentration dependency has been extensively studied before; however, their effect on mechanochromism at the nanoscale is left unstudied. In this work, nanofriction force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy were combined to study the effect of pH and ionic strength on the polydiacetylene (PDA) force sensitivity at the nanoscale.

Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is characterized by decreased insulin-stimulated glucose uptake resulting from impaired intracellular trafficking and decreased glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) expression. In this study, we illustrated that tilorone, a low-molecular-weight antiviral agent, improves glucose uptake in vitro and in vivo.

To date, S1P and ApoM in patients with untreated heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) have not been extensively studied. Eighty-one untreated patients with HeFH and 32 healthy control subjects were included in this study.

We aimed to identify FCS patients using either the FCS score proposed by Moulin et al. or with data mining, and assessed the diagnostic applicability of the FCS score.

Since the results of organ-protective treatments cannot always be transferred from laboratory models into human therapies, increasing the translational potential of preclinical settings is an important goal. Our aim was to develop a standardized research protocol, where the progression of sepsis-related events can be characterized reproducibly in model experiments within clinically-relevant time frames.

Hooded crows can cause several problems in cities, including trash scattering, noise disturbance, and aggressive behavior toward humans or pets, and they can be potential vectors of pathogens. To find effective solutions, the public has to be involved in the decision-making process in urban planning management, managed by the city administration.

Progranulin (PGRN) is a multifunctional protein that is known to have various anti-atherogenic effects. To date, the use of serum PGRN in patients with FH has not been studied.

The base-promoted reaction is operationally simple and exhibits a broad substrate scope. The main products in most of the transformations were open-chain 1--aryl-hept-1-enitol type compounds while the expected β-d-glycopyranosylmethyl arenes (benzyl -glycosides) were formed in subordinate yields only.

Previous studies have shown that high lipoprotein(a)- Lp(a) levels are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases in patients with FH. We aimed to assess the associations of serum Lp(a) levels and such vascular diseases in FH using data mining methods and machine learning techniques in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary.

Other reports cited in this review have demonstrated that inhaled, normoxic air-CH mixtures can modulate the in vivo pathways involved in oxidative and nitrosative stress responses and key events of mitochondrial respiration and apoptosis. The overview is divided into two parts, the first being devoted to a brief review of the effects of biologically important gases in the context of hypoxia, while the second part deals with CH bioactivity.

The disease is still underdiagnosed, even though an early diagnosis would be of great importance for the patient to receive proper treatment and to prevent further complications. No studies are available describing the genetic background of Hungarian FH patients.

We systematically surveyed the global literature on the effects of urbanization on species of family Corvidae (crows, choughs, jackdaws, jays, magpies, nutcrackers, ravens, rooks, treepies) to assess the occurrence of corvids in urban environments and the factors affecting their success. We found a total of 424 primary research articles, and the number of articles has increased exponentially since the 1970s.
