Background: Before the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination fixed orthodontic devices, such as brackets and wires, cause challenges not only for the orthodontist but also for the radiologist. Essentially, the MRI-safe scan of the fixed orthodontic tools requires a proper guideline in clinical practice. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine all aspects of MRI-safe scan, including artifact, thermal, and debonding effects, to identify any existing gaps in knowledge in this regard and develop an evidence-based protocol.

Since we have very limited access to primary human neural samples, derivation of proliferative neural progenitor cells (NPCs) from cells harvested by minimally invasive sampling is a key issue. Here we describe a "shortcut" method to establish proliferative NPC cultures directly from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) via interrupted reprogramming.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInduced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells (NPCs) are promising tools to model complex neurological or psychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia. Multiple studies have compared patient-derived and healthy control NPCs derived from iPSCs in order to investigate cellular phenotypes of this disease, although the establishment, stabilization, and directed differentiation of iPSC lines are rather expensive and time-demanding. However, interrupted reprogramming by omitting the stabilization of iPSCs may allow for the generation of a plastic stage of the cells and thus provide a shortcut to derive NPSCs directly from tissue samples.

Introduction: Mortality data of patients with acute myocardial infarction are incomplete in Hungary.
Aim: The aim of the authors was to analyse the data of 8582 myocardial infarction patients (4981 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction) registered in the Hungarian Myocardial Infarction Register in order to define the hospital, 30-day, and 1-year mortality. To evaluate the prehospital mortality of myocardial infarction, all myocardial infarction and sudden death were registered in five districts of Budapest.
Authors present the methodology and first data of Hungarian Myocardial Infarction Register Pilot Study started 1st of January, 2010. The aim of the study is to collect epidemiological data on myocardial infarction, to examine the natural history of the disease and to investigate the main characteristics on patient care in the pilot area. The program is using standardized diagnostic criteria and predefined electronic data record forms (eCRF).

Background: Microarray analysis offers the opportunity of screening transcriptional expression profile of neoplastic cells on a genomic level. Defining consistent changes in gene expression pattern of tumours enables the detection of genes essential for tumorigenesis and might provide biomarkers to early recognition of malignant behaviour and new therapeutical targets.
Patients And Methods: A high-density oligonucleotide array with 20,000 human gene-specific oligonucleotide was used to analyze benign and early-stage malignant thyroid tumours of epithelial origin: follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma and papillary carcinoma, compared to normal thyroid tissue.
The thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) has a unique 50 residue (317-366) ectodomain insertion that sets it apart from other glycoprotein hormone receptors (GPHRs). Other ancient members of the leucine-rich repeat G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) (LGR) family do exhibit ectodomain insertions of variable lengths and sequences. The TSHR-specific insert is digested, apparently spontaneously, to release the ectodomain (A-subunit) leaving the balance of the ectodomain attached to the serpentine (B-subunit).

Thyroid nodules are common. It would very helpful if genetic markers that can diagnose malignancy from fine needle aspiration samples were available. Few such markers has been thus identified and none are specific.

Methods: In the current study, the authors used polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism to determine the HLA-DR type in 75 patients with well differentiated thyroid carcinoma from the same area as their previous population, and they compared the current results with the results from a group of 170 healthy controls.
Results: A significant increase in HLA-DR11, rather than HLA-DR1, was observed in patients with well differentiated thyroid carcinoma among a population of patients from the same area that was studied previously.
Aims: Factors influencing prognosis and long-term outcome of thyroid cancer have been described by several groups. We wished to asses the previously described prognostic factors in a moderately iodine deficient region in Hungary.
Methods: Four hundred and fifty-four out of 492 patients who had surgery for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC, 386 cases) and follicular thyroid cancer (FTC, 106 cases) between 1971 and 1998 were analyzed.
Number of bile duct injuries is rising with the spreading of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Authors analyse the complications in the last 8 years, especially the bile duct injuries. During this period 1657 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed.

Between May 1999, and December 2000 the authors performed 11 transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomies (LA). Conversion due to bleeding in 3 cases and due to suspected malignancy in 1 case was necessary.

It is, however, not clear how the moderate iodine deficiency in Hungary can influence the previously described prognostic factors by other means than shifting differentiated cancer incidence toward the follicular type. Data of 423 out of 472 patients who had been operated on for papillary (372) and follicular (100) thyroid cancer between 1971 and 1997 at our institution have been analyzed retrospectively.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA retrospective analysis was conducted on 36 patients who underwent surgery for childhood or juvenile thyroid cancers and who were regularly followed up during the course of 30 years. The biological properties and late prognosis of these patients were assessed, and the clinical and morphological characteristics of the tumors were examined. The distribution of the DNA content in the tumor cells was compared with that in adult tumor cells, and the results of cytogenetic tests performed on mothers operated on for thyroid tumors and their children are also discussed.

The ras oncogene mutation rate was significantly higher in the iodide-deficient area, being 85 versus 17% in the adenomas, and 50 versus 10% in the follicular carcinomas. No mutations were found in papillary carcinomas.

The nuclear DNA content of tumour cells is correlated with the clinical outcome of a wide range of malignant disorders, among them thyroid neoplasia. The authors performed DNA determinations by means of the Feulgen cytofluorimetric method and demonstrate the connection between ploidy and biological aggressivity in cases of highly malignant thyroid tumours. The nuclear DNA content was measured in fresh surgical specimens from 53 patients suffering from malignancy, 13 of which proved pathohistologically to be highly malignant: 8 were anaplastic giant cell carcinomas, 3 squamous cell carcinomas and 2 were malignant lymphomas.

Cytogenetic data of three papillary carcinomas and a follicular adenoma using direct preparations or cell cultures or both after 7 to 60 days in vitro are presented. Although karyotype of the follicular adenoma proved completely normal, in each of the three papillary carcinomas a modal chromosome number in the diploid range and a deleted 11q were observed. In case 1 the del(11)(q23) was associated with rearrangement of chromosome 1 and other marker chromosomes.
