Background: Data on the changes of heart rate variability (HRV) and their prognostic significance during ageing are limited.
Methods: HRV analyzes were done from standardized 45-min ECG recordings, which consisted of 15 min recordings in lying down, sitting positions and during walking. We used time domain-, frequency domain- and non-linear methods to estimate HRV.
Background: Data on the occurrence of unexpected sudden cardiac death (SCD) in different seasons are limited.
Methods: All unexpected sudden death victims have to undergo medico-legal autopsy obligated by the Finnish law. Consecutive series of all unexpected autopsied SCD victims (n = 5,869) were prospectively collected from the geographically defined area in the Northern Finland during a twenty years period from 1998 to 2017.

Methods: The standard deviation (SD) of T-wave morphology dispersion (TMD-SD) and the SD of total cosine R-to-T were analyzed on a beat-to-beat basis from a 5-minute period of the standard resting 12-lead electrocardiogram obtained before the clinical stress test in 1702 patients with angiographically verified CAD and well-preserved left ventricular function.

Background: There has been some controversy about the day-of-the-week (septadian) variation of unexpected sudden cardiac death (SCD).
Methods: We evaluated the incidence of unexpected SCD on different days of the week in a consecutive series of 5869 SCD victims from Northern Finland [the FINGESTURE study (Finnish Genetic Study of Arrhythmic Events)]. As it is mandatory in Finland, a medico-legal autopsy was performed on all unexpected sudden death victims.
Background: Regardless of progress in treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD), there is still a significant residual risk of death in patients with CAD, highlighting the need for additional risk stratification markers. Methods And Results: We assessed the associations of T- and P-wave morphology parameters analysed from the standard 12-lead electrocardiograms with left ventricular fibrosis in 378 victims of unexpected sudden cardiac death (SCD) who underwent medico-legal autopsy. Based on autopsy findings, the SCD victims were categorized into four different groups according to different stages of severity of left ventricular fibrosis (substantial fibrosis, moderate patchy fibrosis, scattered mild fibrosis, no fibrosis).

Introduction: The prognostic significance of P-wave morphology in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is not well-known.
Methods: A total of 1946 patients with angiographically verified CAD were included in the Innovation to reduce Cardiovascular Complications of Diabetes at the Intersection (ARTEMIS) study. The P-wave morphology could be analyzed in 1797 patients.
Importance: Myocardial infarction in the absence of major or unrecognized symptoms are characterized as silent (SMI). The prevalence of SMI among individuals who experience sudden cardiac death (SCD), with or without concomitant electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, has not previously been described in detail from large studies to our knowledge.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of SMI in individuals who experience SCD without a prior diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and to detect ECG abnormalities associated with SMI-associated SCD.
