The dataset presents a 43 year-long reanalysis of pollen seasons for three major allergenic genera of trees in Europe: alder (Alnus), birch (Betula), and olive (Olea). Driven by the meteorological reanalysis ERA5, the atmospheric composition model SILAM predicted the flowering period and calculated the Europe-wide dispersion pattern of pollen for the years 1980-2022. The model applied an extended 4-dimensional variational data assimilation of in-situ observations of aerobiological networks in 34 European countries to reproduce the inter-annual variability and trends of pollen production and distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined medication-related problems (MRPs) in asthma vs. allergy patients, finding that 24% of asthma patients and 12% of allergy patients reported at least one MRP during self-management.
  • The most common issues for asthma patients involved timing of medication (16%), administration technique (7%), and inhaler use (4%), while allergy patients mainly struggled with remembering to take their medications on time (10%).
  • The study concluded that severe cases increase the risk for MRPs, and health professionals should focus on education for younger, older, and less-educated patients to help manage these issues.*

Article Synopsis
  • Anaphylaxis cases have risen in Europe, with a prevalence of 0.3% and an incidence of 1.5-7.9 per 100,000 person-years, and the link between allergic multimorbidity and anaphylaxis in adults is being explored.
  • A study used Finnish population data showing that adults with multiple allergic conditions had a higher risk of experiencing anaphylaxis, particularly when food allergy and asthma were involved.
  • The findings indicate that the risk of anaphylaxis increases with the number of allergic diseases, suggesting that individuals with multiple allergies, especially food allergies combined with asthma, should be monitored closely for anaphylaxis risk.

Article Synopsis
  • Guided self-management for asthma is well-supported, but there's less guidance for allergy patients; this study analyzed the differences in how both groups receive support.
  • A survey of Finnish pharmacies found that 73% of asthma patients and 61% of anaphylaxis patients received written action plans, with variability among other allergy patients.
  • Community pharmacists were the primary source of treatment information for both groups, but older males and less-educated patients received less information overall.

In Finland, a systematic public health programme was implemented from 2008 to 2018 to mitigate the burden of allergic disorders by revisiting the prevention strategy. Allergy health and contacts with natural environment were emphasized to promote immunological and psychological resilience instead of poorly justified avoidance. Allergy management practices were improved and low-valued recommendations for care, for example for food allergy, were revised.

Background: Asthma, allergic conditions, and COPD overlap, but the effect of them and their combinations on disease severity, need for drugs, use of healthcare, and costs is poorly known.

Objective: To study how different allergic diseases co-occur in asthma and allergy patients and evaluate the use of medication well as drug and healthcare costs.

Methods: Nationwide Allergy Barometer Survey was carried out in the Finnish pharmacies during 1 week in September 2016.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is increasingly acknowledged as having a substantial socioeconomic impact associated with impaired work productivity, although available information remains fragmented.

Objective: This systematic review summarizes recently available information to provide a quantitative estimate of the burden of AR on work productivity including lost work time (ie, absenteeism) and reduced performance while working (ie, presenteeism).

Methods: A Medline search retrieved original studies from 2005 to 2015 pertaining to the impact of AR on work productivity.

Background: We aimed to study the prevalence of chronic comorbidities in asthma patients and the costs of health care use associated with asthma with comorbidities.

Material And Methods: We analysed the prevalence of the four most common chronic diseases in asthma patients in 2008-2014 in Finland. Prevalence of coronary artery disease, diabetes and dyslipidaemia, hypertension, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatic diseases, and severe psychiatric disease was studied by register of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
