Chlorophylls are photoactive molecular building blocks essential to most photosynthetic systems. They have comparatively simple optical spectra defined by states with near-orthogonal transition dipole moments, referred to as B and B in the blue/green spectral region, and Q and Q in the red. Underlying these spectra is a surprisingly complex electronic structure, where strong electronic-vibrational interactions are crucial to the description of state characters.

Bio-nanohybrid devices featuring natural photocatalysts bound to a nanostructure hold great promise in the search for sustainable energy conversion. One of the major challenges of integrating biological systems is protecting them against harsh environmental conditions while retaining, or ideally enhancing their photophysical properties. In this mainly computational work we investigate an assembly of cyanobacterial photosystem I (PS I) embedded in a metal-organic framework (MOF), namely the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8.

Purpose: Many elastography studies have shown that liver stiffness increases with fibrosis and thus can be used as a reliable marker for noninvasively staging fibrosis. However, the sensitivity of viscosity-related mechanical parameters, such as shear wave dispersion, to liver fibrosis is less well understood.

Methods: In this proof-of-concept study, 15 healthy volunteers and 37 patients with chronic liver disease and biopsy-proven fibrosis were prospectively investigated by MR elastography at six drive frequencies of 35-60 Hz.

Article Synopsis
  • Human extravillous trophoblast (EVT) invasion is crucial for forming the maternal-fetal interface, with dysfunctional EVT activity linked to early-onset preeclampsia (eoPE).
  • Recent research indicates that EVTs invade the uterine blood vessels early in pregnancy, leading to the hypothesis that EVT-derived factors might predict eoPE.
  • This study shows that the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) is produced only by EVTs and not by maternal cells, with lower DAO levels in pregnant women who later developed eoPE compared to controls, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic marker.

Background: Whereas in-stent restenosis (ISR) is widely discussed after coronary stenting procedures, this phenomenon is a considerable problem after interventional treatment of carotid artery stenosis as well. We sought to quantify ISR rate and to identify important respective risk factors in our cohort.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of our carotid artery stenting database comprising 1165 angiographically successful interventional procedures during the last 19 years.
