Is bone-cement augmentation of screw-anchor fixation systems superior in unstable femoral neck fractures? A biomechanical cadaveric study.

Objectives: Improved fixation techniques with optional use of bone cements for implant augmentation have been developed to enhance stability and reduce complication rates after osteosynthesis of femoral neck fractures. This biomechanical study aimed to evaluate the effect of cement augmentation on implant anchorage and overall performance of screw-anchor fixation systems in unstable femoral neck fractures.

Methods: Ten pairs of human cadaveric femora were used to create standardized femoral neck fractures (Pauwels type 3 fractures; AO/OTA 31-B2) with comminution and were fixed by means of a rotationally stable screw-anchor (RoSA) system.

Temperature dependence of the conversion efficiency of photochromic perylene bisimide dithienylcyclopentene triads embedded in a polymer.

Photochromic molecules that are covalently linked to a strong fluorophore combine the requirements of external control and strong fluorescence, which will become increasingly important for super-resolution microscopy techniques based on single molecules. However, given the bulky structure of such constructs, steric hindrance might affect their photoconversion efficiencies upon immobilising them for imaging purposes. In this study the efficiencies of the photochromic conversion processes of molecular triads that are embedded in a polymer have been studied as a function of temperature.

EPA guidance on improving the image of psychiatry.

This paper explores causes, explanations and consequences of the negative image of psychiatry and develops recommendations for improvement. It is primarily based on a WPA guidance paper on how to combat the stigmatization of psychiatry and psychiatrists and a Medline search on related publications since 2010. Furthermore, focussing on potential causes and explanations, the authors performed a selective literature search regarding additional image-related issues such as mental health literacy and diagnostic and treatment issues.

DSM-5 reviewed from different angles: goal attainment, rationality, use of evidence, consequences—part 2: bipolar disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, personality disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, neurocognitive disorders.

Part 1 of this paper discussed several more general aspects of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and offered a detailed, paradigmatic analysis of changes made to the chapter on depressive disorders. This second part focusses on several other disorders, including bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The respective changes and their possible consequences are discussed under consideration of traditional psychiatric classification, particularly from the perspective of European traditions and on the basis of a PubMed search and review papers.

At the ionic liquid|metal interface: structure formation and temperature dependent behavior of an ionic liquid adlayer on Au(111).

The growth, structure formation and thermal disordering of (sub-)monolayer films of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BMP][TFSA] grown under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions on Au(111) have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) under UHV conditions at temperatures between 100 and 298 K. At room temperature, two-dimensional film growth occurs up to one monolayer coverage, with both cations and anions in direct contact with the gold substrate, as shown by ARXPS, and STM images reveal a 2D liquid state of the adlayer. At lower temperatures, motion is frozen and a disordered 2D glass state as well as a 2D crystalline phase with long-range order are formed.

Increasing pressure ulcer rates and changes in delivery of care: a retrospective analysis at a University Clinic.

Aim: To evaluate the relation between pressure ulcers and delivery of care.

Background: No decrease of pressure ulcer rates could be recognised in acute hospital care, despite intensive efforts in prevention. Furthermore, reports show increasing rates.

Reduced cardio-respiratory coupling after treatment with nortriptyline in contrast to S-citalopram.

Objective: Major depressive disorder is associated with increased cardiac mortality. A decrease in vagal modulation related to reduced heart rate variability might contribute to increased mortality among many other factors. We sought to examine the hypothesis that nortriptyline treatment will be associated with a decrease in heart rate variability and coupling between heart rate and respiration compared to treatment with S-citalopram.

Evidence-based medicine in psychopharmacotherapy: possibilities, problems and limitations.

Psychopharmacotherapy should now be regulated in the sense of evidence-based medicine, as is the case in other areas of clinical treatment in medicine. In general this is a meaningful development, which principally will have a positive impact on routine health care in psychiatry. But several related problems should not be ignored.

Short-term treatment with risperidone or haloperidol in first-episode schizophrenia: 8-week results of a randomized controlled trial within the German Research Network on Schizophrenia.

Patients with first-episode schizophrenia appear to respond to lower doses of neuroleptics, and to be more sensitive to developing extrapyramidal side-effects. The authors therefore compared in such patients the efficacy and extrapyramidal tolerability of comparatively low dosages of the atypical neuroleptic risperidone and of the conventional neuroleptic haloperidol. Risperidone was hypothesized to have better extrapyramidal tolerability and efficacy in treating negative symptoms.

A prospective, multicentre, open-label study of aripiprazole in the management of patients with schizophrenia in psychiatric practice in Europe: Broad Effectiveness Trial with Aripiprazole in Europe (EU-BETA).

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of aripiprazole in schizophrenia in a naturalistic setting in 14 European countries.

Methods: This multicentre, open-label study of aripiprazole evaluated outpatients with schizophrenia for whom a medication switch was clinically reasonable or antipsychotic initiation was required. Patients (n = 833) were randomized in a 4:1 ratio to aripiprazole (recommended starting dose 15 mg/day, permitted adjustment 10-30 mg/day) (n = 680) or another antipsychotic (safety control [SC] group) (n = 153) for 8 weeks.

A 14-3-3 protein of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii associated with the endoplasmic reticulum: nucleotide sequence of the cDNA and the corresponding gene and derived amino acid sequence.

Two major 14-3-3 proteins of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were purified and partially sequenced. The obtained data show that the 30-kDa isoform predominant in the cytosol is encoded by a previously cloned and sequenced 14-3-3 cDNA whereas the 27-kDa isoform represents a new 14-3-3 protein which is largely associated with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Therefore, the corresponding cDNA was cloned and sequenced.
