Positive-ion laser desorption/ionization (LDI) of fullerenes contained in soot as produced by the Krätschmer-Huffman process delivers a wide range of fullerene molecular ions from C to above C. Here, the collision cross section (CCS) values of those fullerene molecular ions are determined using a trapped ion mobility-quadrupole-time-of-flight (TIMS-Q-TOF) instrument. While CCS values in the range from C to C are already known with high accuracy, those of ions from C onward had yet to be determined.

Aiming at a better fundamental understanding of the chemistry of bimetallic PtAg/Pt(111) surfaces, we have investigated the stability, electronic properties and CO adsorption properties of bimetallic PtAg surfaces, including pseudomorphic Ag film covered Pt(111) surfaces and PtAg/Pt(111) monolayer surface alloys, using periodic density functional theory calculations. The data provide detailed insights into the relative stabilities of different surface configurations, as indicated by their formation enthalpies and surface energies, and changes in their electronic properties, , in the projected local densities of states and shifts in the d-band center. The adsorption properties of different Pt ensembles were systematically tested using CO as a probe molecule.

A new implementation of a dedicated ion source for field ionization (FI), field desorption (FD), and liquid injection field desorption/ionization (LIFDI) for the JEOL AccuTOF GC series of orthogonal-acceleration time-of-flight instruments is presented. In contrast to existing implementations, this third-party LIFDI probe and source combination does not require the exchange of the entire ion source comprising ion source block and lens stack to switch from electron ionization (EI) to LIFDI. Rather, the methods may be swapped conveniently by only exchanging the ion source block for a mechanical probe guide and inserting the LIFDI probe in place of the standard direct insertion probe (DIP) via the vacuum lock.

A procedure is described that results in a substantial increase in signal intensity and in improved accuracy of positive-ion mass calibration when using commercially available kits of monodisperse dendrimers (SpheriCal(®)) in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS). The peak intensities are amplified by an admixture of 2-[(2E)-3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2-methylprop-2-enylidene] malononitrile (DCTB) matrix to the kits comprising of 9-nitroanthracene matrix, sodium trifluoroacetate, and four dendrimers. Boosted ion formation then permits lower laser fluence to be used and thus yields enhanced mass resolution.

Of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (C(+)) tricyanomethide (A(-)) high-mass cluster ions of both positive ([C(n)A(n-1)](+)) and negative ([C(n-1)A(n)](-)) charge were generated and detected by direct analysis in real time (DART) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry (MS). Bacteria were isolated from necrotic apple and pear tree tissue and from dead wood in Germany and Austria as well as from pear tree exudate in China. They were selected for growth at 37 °C, screened for levan production and then characterized as Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic rods. Nucleotide sequences from 16S rRNA genes, the housekeeping genes dnaJ, gyrB, recA and rpoB alignments, BLAST searches and phenotypic data confirmed by MALDI-TOF analysis showed that these bacteria belong to the genus Gibbsiella and resembled strains isolated from diseased oaks in Britain and Spain.
