Background And Aims: Overweight and obesity are modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the general population, but their prevalence in individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) and whether they confer additional risk of ASCVD independent of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) remains unclear.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 35 540 patients with HeFH across 50 countries, in the EAS FH Studies Collaboration registry. Prevalence of World Health Organization-defined body mass index categories was investigated in adults (n = 29 265) and children/adolescents (n = 6275); and their association with prevalent ASCVD.

Subject-specific finite element (FE) modeling of the mandible bone has recently gained attention for its higher accuracy. A critical modeling factor is including personalized material properties from medical images especially when bone quality has to be respected. However, there is no consensus on the material model for the mandible that realistically estimates the Young's modulus of the bone.

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Theoretical and simulated analyses of selective homonuclear dipolar recoupling sequences serve as primary tools for understanding and determining the robustness of these sequences under various conditions. In this article, we investigate the recently proposed first-order dipolar recoupling sequence known as MODIST (Modest Offset Difference Internuclear Selective Transfer). We evaluate the MODIST transfer efficiency, assessing its dependence on rf-field strengths and the number of simulated spins, extending up to 10 spins.

We identified a rare heterozygous germline loss-of-function variant in the tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF2) in a young adult patient diagnosed with medulloblastoma. This variant is located within the TRAF-C domain of the E3 ubiquitin ligase protein and is predicted to diminish the binding affinity of TRAF2 to upstream receptors and associated adaptor proteins. Integrative genomics revealed a biallelic loss of TRAF2 via partial copy-neutral loss-of-heterozygosity of 9q in the medulloblastoma genome.

Background: Even though antithrombotic therapy (ATT) probably has little or even negative effect on the well-being of patients with cancer near the end of life, it is often continued until death, possibly leading to excess bleeding complications, increased disease burden, reduced quality of life and higher healthcare costs.

Aim: To explore and describe European practice patterns and perspectives of healthcare professionals from different disciplines and specialties on ATT in the end-of-life care (EOLC) of patients with cancer.

Methods: We performed a two-week international cross-sectional survey study using flash-mob research methodology.

Background: The incidence of human infections caused by arthropod-borne viruses, such as the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), has increased globally due to a number of factors, such as climate change and globalization. The exotic mosquito species Aedes albopictus is a significant vector for CHIKV, raising concerns about its transmission potential in temperate regions, including Central Europe. We have therefore investigated the vector competence of Ae.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses how transferring DNA from organelles to the nucleus is crucial for the evolution of eukaryotes, highlighted by a study that identified a specific gene (BSTR) linked to photosynthesis in Populus trichocarpa.
  • BSTR has three exons, with two derived from endophytic sources and one including a large part of a plastid gene related to Rubisco, which is essential for photosynthesis.
  • Overexpressing BSTR in poplar and Arabidopsis plants led to significant increases in plant height (up to 200%) and biomass (up to 200%), demonstrating its potential for enhancing growth under field conditions.

Calibrations in LA-ICP-MS are typically very time-consuming and complex, as they need to be matched to the samples being measured and sectioned on a microtome. Alternatively, gelatin can be in droplet form or as a section, which is a more recent development. In this study, we report on investigations where hot multi-element gelatin solutions are placed in a linear fashion on microscopic slides to conduct comparative statistical observations between doped tissue homogenates from the liver and lung.
