Background: There is a growing number of cancer survivors and increasing interest in models of patient-centred shared care between oncology and primary care.

Objective: The objective of this article was to investigate whether a placement program for general practitioners (GPs) and general practice nurses (GPNs) was feasible, of clinical and professional value, and facilitated knowledge and skills transfer.

Methods: The program recruited GPs and GPNs to complete a 10-hour placement at a cancer centre.

Objective: Studies of the role of the built environment in relation to obesity in young children have reported inconsistent results.

Methods: We explored the association of objective measures of neighbourhood design (dwelling density, land use mix, intersection density, availability of facilities) with the bodyweight status of 501 preschool children (girls = 262; boys = 239) residing in Edmonton, Canada.

Results: Approximately 21% of the children were classified as overweight or at-risk of being overweight according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) growth charts, while 15% of the children were considered overweight or obese according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) criteria.

Background: Overweight and obesity prevalence is increasing in Canadian children. In the Capital Health region of Alberta, there is a need to examine this public health issue and implement strategies to overcome it. Two growth references, one provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the other by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), are available to assess individuals and screen populations for overweight and obesity.

Background: Controversy exists concerning the necessary margin of excision for cutaneous melanoma 2 mm or greater in thickness.

Methods: We conducted a randomized clinical trial comparing 1-cm and 3-cm margins.

Results: Of the 900 patients who were enrolled, 453 were randomly assigned to undergo surgery with a 1-cm margin of excision and 447 with a 3-cm margin of excision; the median follow-up was 60 months.

Objective: To establish a link between tryptophan (a precursor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or serotonin, involved in sleep and fatigue) and post-operative fatigue after major surgery.

Background: There is a link between tryptophan (the precursor for the neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine), and its competitive binding with non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) to albumin in the blood. An increase in the plasma concentration of free tryptophan can lead to an increased rate of synthesis of 5-HT in the brain.
