Background: A cancer diagnosis and treatment can be a stressful, life-altering experience that can pose a threat to life and raise existential challenges. Spirituality may influence the process of coping with the stress of the cancer experience. Studies of the role of spirituality for Muslim cancer patients and survivors are limited.

Understanding the cancer pain experience.

Cancer pain management is a major element of successful cancer survivorship. Regardless of where someone is along the cancer experience, from a newly diagnosed patient to long-term survivor, pain is a potential treatment-related effect that can have a significant impact on a survivor's life. Quality pain management for cancer survivors is complicated by the fact that cancer-related pain can be due to the tumor, surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy.

Image of God, religion, spirituality, and life changes in breast cancer survivors: a qualitative approach.

Religion and spirituality are much studied coping mechanisms; however, their relationship to changes in behaviors, relationships, and goals is unclear. This study explored the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on religion/faith and changes in behaviors, relationship, or goals. In this qualitative study, women, who participated in a larger, quantitative study, completed written responses to questions regarding the role of religion/faith in their lives, the impact of their diagnosis on their image of God and on faith/religious beliefs, and any changes in behaviors, relationships, or life goals were examined.

Improving knowledge, assessment, and attitudes related to pain management: evaluation of an intervention.

Pain control in the acute care setting is repeatedly described in the literature as problematic. The purpose of this clinical research project was to evaluate an educational intervention designed to improve the management of pain in an acute care setting. Introduction: A diagnosis of cancer is a life-changing event for most people. The trauma and uncertainties of a breast cancer diagnosis can affect survivors' psychological well-being. Religion and/or spirituality can provide a means of support for many women as they live with the realities of a diagnosis of cancer.

Association between residential proximity to PERC dry cleaning establishments and kidney cancer in New York City.

Perchloroethylene (PERC) is commonly used as a dry cleaning solvent and is believed to be a human carcinogen, with occupational exposure resulting in elevated rates of kidney cancer. Living near a dry cleaning facility using PERC has been demonstrated to increase the risk of PERC exposure throughout the building where the dry cleaning is conducted, and in nearby buildings. We designed this study to test the hypothesis that living in an area where there are many PERC dry cleaners increases PERC exposure and the risk of kidney cancer.

Angiotensin II impairs endothelial function via tyrosine phosphorylation of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase.

Proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (PYK2) can be activated by angiotensin II (Ang II) and reactive oxygen species. We report that in endothelial cells, Ang II enhances the tyrosine phosphorylation of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) in an AT(1)-, H(2)O(2)-, and PYK2-dependent manner.
