Background: Chlamydia and gonorrhea are 2 of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide, presenting major public health challenges and resulting in billions of dollars in direct medical costs in the United States. Incarcerated women have a particularly elevated risk of these infections, which can result in serious sequelae if left untreated. On December 13, 2021, the Los Angeles County Jail system began offering opt-out urogenital chlamydia and gonorrhea screening to all newly incarcerated women.

Introduction: Cancer-associated cachexia (CC) is a progressive syndrome characterized by unintentional weight loss, muscle atrophy, fatigue, and poor outcomes that affects most patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Background: Neoadjuvant therapy leads to a clinical complete response in a considerable proportion of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, allowing for possible nonoperative management. Background: Natural killer (NK) cells are cytotoxic cells capable of recognizing heterogeneous cancer targets without prior sensitization, making them promising prospects for use in cellular immunotherapy. Companion dogs develop spontaneous cancers in the context of an intact immune system, representing a valid cancer immunotherapy model. Eye-gaze technology offers professionals a range of feedback tools, but it is not well understood how these are used to support decision-making or how professionals understand their purpose and function. This paper explores how professionals use a variety of feedback tools and provides commentary on their current use and ideas for future tool development. The study adopted a focus group methodology with two groups of professional participants: those involved in the assessment and provision of eye-gaze technology ( = 6) and those who interact with individuals using eye-gaze technology on an ongoing basis ( = 5).

Correctional settings provide a high-risk environment for hepatitis A transmission because of the high proportion of homelessness and injection drug use among persons who are incarcerated. On May 30, 2023, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health informed the Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control (CDSC) unit of the Los Angeles County Jail system that a symptomatic incarcerated person had received a positive test result for acute hepatitis A. Upon learning the next day that the patient was a food handler, CDSC staff members identified 5,830 potential contacts of the index patient, 1,702 of whom had been released from the jail.

Muscle atrophy and weakness are prevalent and debilitating conditions in dogs that cannot be reliably prevented or treated by current approaches. In non-canine species, the natural dietary compound ursolic acid inhibits molecular mechanisms of muscle atrophy, leading to improvements in muscle health. To begin to translate ursolic acid to canine health, we developed a novel ursolic acid dietary supplement for dogs and confirmed its safety and tolerability in dogs.

In response to the opioid epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released best practice recommendations for prescribing, yet adoption of these guidelines has been fragmented and frequently met with uncertainty by both patients and providers. This study aims to describe the development and implementation of a comprehensive approach to improving opioid stewardship in a large network of primary care providers. The authors developed a 3-tier approach to opioid management: (1) establishment and implementation of best practices for prescribing opioids, (2) development of a weaning process to decrease opioid doses when the risk outweighs benefits, and (3) support for patients when opioid use disorders were identified.

Background: Correctional populations have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, and many large outbreaks have occurred in jails and prisons. Vaccination is a key strategy to reduce the SARS-CoV-2 transmission in carceral settings. Bystander activation of memory T cells occurs via cytokine signaling alone in the absence of T cell receptor (TCR) signaling and provides a means of amplifying T cell effector responses in an antigen-nonspecific manner. While the role of Programmed Cell Death Protein 1 (PD-1) on antigen-specific T cell responses is extensively characterized, its role in bystander T cell responses is less clear. We examined the role of the PD-1 pathway during human and mouse non-antigen-specific memory T cell bystander activation and observed that PD-1+ T cells demonstrated less activation and proliferation than activated PD-1- populations in vitro.
