Systolic myocardial contraction may produce changes in coronary resistance and capacitance that persist throughout a normal diastole. In addition, coronary resistance and capacitance as determined in the arrested heart may not accurately describe normal diastolic behavior. To evaluate these possibilities, an identification method capable of characterizing the input impedance of the coronary circulation in as little as 150 ms was developed.

In fibrillating hearts vasodilated with adenosine or carbocromen, coronary flow and the coronary pressure-flow relation were not affected by changes in great cardiac vein pressure (PGCV) below a threshold value of 11 +/- 0.9 (mean +/- SEM) mm Hg.

Measurements of total intramyocardial blood volume were made by using [125I]albumin as a plasma marker and technetium-99m as a red blood cell marker. In one group of rats (n = 8), diastolic arrest was induced by an intravenous injection of KCl; in a second group (n = 8), systolic arrest was induced by an intravenous injection of BaCl2.

In reality, the response of the gonococcus to NHS is probably governed by several parameters involving a number of outer-membrane (OM) components. We surveyed the serum reactivities of 14 strains of N.

In both assays, the strains presented a spectrum of sensitivity to the serum. In the dilution plate assay, results with two different concentrations of human serum were similar for most, but not all of the strains tested.

Rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure, and nephrotic range proteinuria were also present. The patient was found to have acute human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection confirmed by the presence of HIV antigen in his serum and subsequent evolution of an HIV antibody profile typical of acute seroconversion.

True thymic hyperplasia (enlarged gland composed of histologically unremarkable cortical and medullary parenchyma) and lymphoid hyperplasia (medullary lymphoid follicles in the clinical setting of autoimmunity) usually develop as independent pathologic processes. We reviewed the clinical features and gross and microscopic pathology of 2 hyperthyroid patients with features of both thymic hyperplasia and lymphoid hyperplasia. The diagnosis of thymic hyperplasia was supported by thymic weights greater than two standard deviations above the mean weight for age and histologic evidence of expanded cortical and medullary parenchyma.

A protein analogous to Escherichia coli Braun lipoprotein was not detected with gonococcal cell wall preparations. The identity of the PG-associated proteins was confirmed immunologically with antibody generated against purified cell walls.

The authors report a case of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the small intestine in a young patient with protein S deficiency. These disorders have not been previously reported to occur together. Protein S deficiency may cause thromboses in unusual sites, including the mesenteric veins.

Previous studies showed that these transformants have Protein IAs which are minimally different by proteinase K cleavage and primary structural and peptide mapping and bear LPS which vary slightly on SDS-PAGE. Binding of C3 and C9 on FA635 exceeded binding on FA638 in NHS and in adsorbed NHS.

This material was purified and analyzed for protein, lipopolysaccharide, and nucleic acid content. The electrophoretic protein profiles of two bleb-rich fractions, called BI and BII, were distinct, with only BII containing lipopolysaccharide and outer membrane proteins I and III.

In 1986 and 1987, four patients with tibial malunion involving both angular and torsional misalignment underwent surgical correction by a single-cut technique based on a mathematical model of long bone deformity. The technique involved a single surgical cut, followed by rotation of the two fragments along the osteotomy plane. The orientation of the osteotomy is based on a computer-assisted design.

Four cases of thymic hyperplasia (TH) and/or lymphoid hyperplasia (LH) were investigated immunohistochemically for evidence of myoid cell (MC) and epithelial cell (EC) differentiation using antibodies to myoglobin, desmin, and cytokeratin. Although MCs were identified in all the cases, the most impressive perifollicular proliferation of ECs and MCs was seen in the hyperthyroid patient with TH/LH, suggesting that these cells have a role in immune function. The unusual combination of LH and TH in this patient demonstrates that exceptional cases can show overlapping features of what are otherwise considered to be separate thymic lesions.

A system of protein purification, using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electroblotting, that results in purified outer membrane proteins of the gram-negative bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae is described. The proteins, which ranged in apparent molecular mass from approximately 31,000 to approximately 92,000 Da, were located by naphthol blue black staining, eluted from nitrocellulose membranes using 88% formic acid, and precipitated by the addition of concentrated ammonium hydroxide. Up to 65% of the original protein present was recovered by this procedure.
