Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers created a bifunctional nanozyme using specific materials like Fe(III) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphine and platinum nanoclusters for precise detection without the need for extra voltage.
  • * The new sensing platform was tested on clinical samples, successfully differentiating between healthy individuals and those with varying severities of periodontitis, paving the way for improved diagnostics and the design of efficient nanozymes.

The point-of-care test of tumor markers in saliva with high specificity and sensitivity for early diagnosis of oral cancer is of great interest and significance, but remaining a daunting challenge due to the low concentration of such biomarkers in oral fluid. Herein, a turn-off biosensor based on opal photonic crystal (OPC) enhanced upconversion fluorescence is proposed to detect the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in saliva by applying fluorescence resonance energy transfer sensing strategy. Hydrophilic PEI ligands are modified on upconversion nanoparticles to enhance the sensitivity of biosensor by promoting sufficient contact between saliva and detection region.

Article Synopsis
  • Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to significant dental damage if not diagnosed early, highlighting the need for effective diagnostic tools.
  • A new dual-channel electrochemical immunosensor has been developed to detect two key biomarkers in saliva, IL-1β and MMP-8, which can aid in the early diagnosis and monitoring of periodontitis.
  • The sensor shows excellent sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, with the ability to differentiate between various stages of periodontitis, making it a promising tool for point-of-care applications.

Sulfate radicals (SO·) play important biological roles in biomedical and environmental engineering, such as antimicrobial, antitumor, and disinfection. Compared with other common free radicals, it has the advantages of a longer half-life and higher oxidation potential, which could bring unexpected effects. These properties have prompted researchers to make great contributions to biology and environmental engineering by exploiting their properties.
