Article Synopsis
  • The prevalence of opiate use is rising, affecting about 0.6% of the global population, leading to many infants being born with prenatal opioid exposure.
  • Animal and human studies show that this exposure negatively impacts brain development and anatomy, but the effects of postnatal exposure on hospitalized infants are less understood.
  • The review discusses the effects of both prenatal and postnatal opioid exposure on neurodevelopment and suggests resources and strategies to address and possibly reduce developmental setbacks in affected infants.

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to analyze the acoustic features of infant cries using machine learning to determine their underlying behavioral states, such as pain, fussiness, or hunger.
  • The ChatterBaby app evaluated over 1,000 cries, achieving a 90.7% accuracy in identifying pain cries and highlighting that cries associated with colic were more often linked to pain than fussiness or hunger.
  • The findings indicate that there are consistent acoustic characteristics in infant cries that can serve as objective indicators of different states, suggesting a possible shared neuronal pathway for colic and pain-related cries.

Breast-feeding is the optimal source of newborn nutrition in term infants and is associated with multiple short- and long-term health benefits. Establishment of breast-feeding may be difficult in a small subset of mothers, which can lead to adverse consequences in the newborn. Some of the consequences of suboptimal nutritional provision to the newborn, such as severe hyperbilirubinemia and breast-feeding-associated hypernatremic dehydration, can have devastating and long-lasting sequelae.
