Melasma is a challenging, acquired hyperpigmentary disorder. The gold standard treatment is Kligman's formulation, which contains hydroquinone, tretinoin, and dexamethasone, but its long-term use is limited by the risk of exogenous ochronosis. Cysteamine, a tyrosinase inhibitor, reduces melanocyte activity and melanin production, showing strong depigmenting effects in patients resistant to Kligman's formulation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the development of zwitterionic hyperbranched polymer (HBP) dots integrated into layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for long-lasting antibacterial effects.
  • The HBPs feature a unique spherical structure, with special blue luminescence, good water solubility, and various functional groups that help with antibacterial activity and intercalation into LDHs.
  • X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to confirm changes in layer spacing and the presence of functional groups, showing that the HBP/LDH hybrids can provide effective and controlled antibacterial release over time.

Multispecies microbial communities drive most ecosystems on Earth. Chemical and biological interactions within these communities can affect the survival of individual members and the entire community. However, the prohibitively high number of possible interactions within a microbial community has made the characterization of factors that influence community development challenging.

There is an ongoing need to do more with less and provide highly multiplexed analysis from limited sample volumes. Improved "sample sparing" assays would have a broad impact across pediatric and other rare sample type studies in addition to enabling sequential sampling. This capability would advance both clinical and basic research applications.

For in vitro neutrophil functional assays, neutrophils are typically isolated from whole blood, having the target cells exposed to an artificial microenvironment with altered kinetics. Isolated neutrophils exhibit limited lifespans of only a few hours ex vivo, significantly shorter than the 3-5 day lifespan of neutrophils in vivo. In addition, due to neutrophils' inherently high sensitivity, neutrophils removed from whole blood exhibit stochastic non-specific activation that contributes to assay variability.

Leukocytes navigate through interstitial spaces resulting in deformation of both the motile leukocytes and surrounding cells. Creating an in vitro system that models the deformable cellular environment encountered in vivo has been challenging. Here, we engineer microchannels with a liquid-liquid interface that exerts confining pressures (200-3000 Pa) similar to cells in tissues, and, thus, is deformable by cell generated forces.

Sensory pathways first elucidated in Caenorhabditis elegans are conserved across free-living and parasitic nematodes, even though each species responds to a diverse array of compounds. Most nematode sensory assays are performed by tallying observations of worm behavior on two-dimensional planes using agarose plates. These assays have been successful in the study of volatile sensation but are poorly suited for investigation of water-soluble gustation or parasitic nematodes without a free-living stage.

As a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, stroke constitutes a significant global health burden. Ischemic stroke accounts for 80% of cases and occurs due to an arterial thrombus, which impedes cerebral blood flow and rapidly leads to cell death. As the most abundant cell type within the central nervous system, astrocytes play a critical role within the injured brain.

Radiation oncology is uniquely poised to benefit from the development of remote learning tools, given the need for mastery of often challenging basic science topics, as well as the interprogram heterogeneity of resident educational quality. Our team successfully created and disseminated 4 high-yield animated physics educational videos through the collaboration of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and a graphic design specialist. This is a unique process requiring significant intellectual, monetary, and time capital.

Disproportionate sex, racial, and ethnic diversity remains in the radiation oncology physician workforce despite widespread awareness and longitudinal efforts to improve representation. In this collaborative review, we define the rationale and components of holistic review and how it can be best used to provide a comprehensive evaluation of applicants to residency programs in radiation oncology. We initially discuss the current state of diversity in the field of radiation oncology and highlight the components of the residency selection process that may serve to perpetuate existing biases.

Doppler-radar-based continuous human motion recognition recently has attracted extensive attention, which is a favorable choice for privacy and personal security. Existing results of continuous human motion recognition (CHMR) using mmWave FMCW Radar are not considered the continuous human motion with the high similarity problem. In this paper, we proposed a new CHMR algorithm with the consideration of the high similarity (HS) problem, called as CHMR-HS, by using the modified Transformer-based learning model.

In this study we prepared six types of carbon nanodots (CNDs) from natural plant materials - through carbonization of two species of bamboo (Bamboo-I, Bamboo-II) and one type of wood (Wood), and through hydrothermal processing of the stem and root of the herb Hayata (MO) and of the agricultural waste of two species of pineapple root (PA, PB). The resulting CNDs were spherical with dimensions on the nanoscale (3-7 nm); furthermore, CND-Bamboo I, CND-Wood, CND-Bamboo II, CND-MO, CND-PA, and CND-PB displayed fluorescence quantum yields of 9.63, 12.

In this study, we used one-pot A + B polymerizations to synthesize two aliphatic + alicyclic polymer dots (PDs) having non-conjugated hyperbranched structures, employing two types of dianhydrides as the A components, possessing bridged bicyclic alkene (PD-BT) and non-alkene (PD-ET) units, and Jeffamine T403 polyetheramine (T403) as the B components. We prepared PD-ET from commercially available ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTAD, A) and T403 (B) and PD-BT from bicyclo[2.2.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed difficulties in scaling current quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based diagnostic methodologies for large-scale infectious disease testing. Bottlenecks include lengthy multi-step processes for nucleic acid extraction followed by qPCR readouts, which require costly instrumentation and infrastructure, as well as reagent and plastic consumable shortages stemming from supply chain constraints. Here we report an Oil Immersed Lossless Total Analysis System (OIL-TAS), which integrates RNA extraction and detection onto a single device that is simple, rapid, cost effective, and requires minimal supplies and infrastructure to perform.
