To mask the antigenic sites of cells for cell therapies, especially for blood transfusion, we investigated the hemocompatibility of two poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethyleneglycol) compared with that of the homopolymer without PEG. Our strategy relies on the potential ability of these copolymers to self-assemble at the erythrocyte surface. The cationic sequence of the copolymer should be able to interact with the glycocalyx by ionic interaction.

Introduction: the study of the host-parasite interactions is a new challenge to understanding some aspects of the parasitic metabolism and the mechanisms of invasion, immunological evasion and damage. Ascaris lumbricoides may cause anemia and thrombosis. It was previously shown that Ascaris lumbricoides modified the superficial charge of erythrocytes, which means that the parasite can capture sialic acid from the red blood cell.

Introduction: Sialic acid of the erythrocytes has hemorreologic and hemodynamic importance, so its reduction causes erythrocyte aggregation and low blood flow.

Objective: To study the effect of A. lumbricoides on the anionic charge of erythrocytes and of desialated erythrocytes, taking the time of contact of the erythrocytes with parasite extracts into account.

Sialic acid is responsible for the negative charge of the erythrocyte. The decrease of sialic acid has hemodynamical and hemorheological importance. The aim was to study the effect of A.

Hyaluronic acid has important functions in inflammatory and tissue reparation processes. Owing to the varied strategies of the parasites to evade the host's immune response, as well as the multiple functions and physiological importance of hyaluronic acid, the aim was to study the hyaluronan binding capacity by Ascaris lumbricoides larval stages. Larval concentrates were prepared by hatching A.

The development of diabetic microangiopathy may produce lesions in distinct organic territories (the skin, among others). With an intention of identifying hemorheologic variables for a better characterization of diabetic patients, we studied plasmatic and blood viscosities (P Visc at 2.30 s(-1) and B Visc at 4.

The aim of this study was to analyze the strength of red blood cells agglutination, induced by autoantibodies in patients with Cold-Agglutinin Hemolytic Disease (CAHD), and the hemorheological profile (deformability and osmotic fragility) by the utilization of rheo-optical techniques. The strength of the antigen-antibody reaction was approached by the work required to dissociate mechanically red blood cells agglutinates. It is focused on the evaluation of the qualitative adhesiveness of cell approached by the dissociation kinetics carried out in a Couette flow (erythroaggregameter).

Electrophoretic light scattering method has been considered to determine both the mean and polydispersity of electrophoretic mobility of normal human red blood cells. The final goal of our study was to optimize an in vitro test allowing us to investigate the interaction of xenobiotics, in particular polyelectrolytes, with blood cells. The feasibility of our method has been evaluated based on the reproducibility of our technique to analyze the native electrophoretic mobility of human RBCs, as well as their evolution in the presence of polycationic compounds, i.

Ascaris lumbricoides and its hosts can present the same ABO System epithopes. The aim was to study ABO epithopes expression in A. lumbricoides by Inhibition Agglutination Test using different monoclonal antibodies and policlonal sera.

Hypertension (HTA) and dyslipidemia (DLP) represent major risk factors for cardiovascular and cerebral-vascular ischemic disease. The mechanisms through which they can induce vascular damage are both metabolic and mechanical. Hemorheological alterations in HTA are result of changes affecting both red cell intrinsic structure and their interactions with the plasmatic components.

RBC flow cytometric analysis is usually used to quantify antigen content. Calibration systems enable antigen content determination by relating mean fluorescence intensity with the number of bound antibody molecules (equivalent to the number of antigen molecules). For that reason, antibodies must be used at saturating concentration, which may lead to agglutination when working with high density antigens.

The aim of this study was to investigate the blood viscosity profile and to evaluate the influence of plasmatic (fibrinogen) and cellular (erythrocyte aggregation) factors in a group of hypertensive patients, compared with a normotensive group. We worked with anticoagulated blood of both non diabetic hypertensive patients (n=31), and healthy individuals (n=40). The plasmatic viscosity and whole blood determination were obtained with a cone-plate viscometer.

A higher than normal glucose concentration in a suspending medium may produce non-enzymatic glycosylation of erythrocyte proteins. This process can modify the viscoelastic properties of erythrocytes. In this paper, we studied the possible relationship between glucose concentration in a suspending medium and erythrocyte rheological parameters.

Background: The quantification of antigens and proteins on RBCs has been achieved by different approaches. Flow cytometry allows the results of the earliest studies to be to reappraised because it offers the possibility of measuring the immunofluorescence intensity of single cells and integrating the individual data of a large number of cells within a very short time.

Study Design And Methods: Flow cytometry was used in this work to analyze the binding of four MoAbs to glycophorin A (GPA) and glycophorin B (GPB).

The P System antigens have been detected in numerous parasites, bacteria and viruses, nevertheless the clinical significance is still unknown. The aim was to study the presence of P1 antigenic determiners in A. lumbricoides extracts by means of the use of 6 different monoclonal antibodies of well-known concentrations and Ig class.

The main objective of the present work was to study modifications in RBC aggregate morphology by analyzing digitized microscopic images and compare them between healthy subjects and patients suffering from essential hypertension. Blood samples were obtained from normal subjects (n=30) and patients suffering from essential hypertension (n=20). RBC aggregate morphology was quantified using direct microscopic observation and numerical analysis of images.
