  • Researchers tested a vaccine called HVT-H9, which uses turkey herpesvirus to protect chickens from H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV).
  • The vaccine successfully induced protective antibodies in broilers and blocked H9N2 AIV infection during trials.
  • HVT-H9 improved chicken weight and increased production efficiency, particularly in situations where there was natural H9N2 AIV exposure, significantly reducing mortality rates.

Article Synopsis
  • A phase III clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different radiation doses (high vs. standard) and irradiation fields (involved field vs. elective nodal) on survival outcomes for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
  • Results indicated that there were no significant differences in overall survival (OS) or progression-free survival (PFS) between the different irradiation fields, but the high-dose treatment suggested an improvement in PFS compared to the standard dose.
  • The best prognostic outcomes were observed in the high-dose with involved field group (HD+IFI), while the standard dose with involved field group (SD+IFI) had the worst outcomes, and no substantial differences in severe adverse events were

Baijiu, a traditional Chinese alcoholic beverage, carries China's rich historical and cultural heritage. Consumers experience varying levels of relaxation and pleasure after consuming different types of Baijiu, with the biological basis of delectation influenced by serotonin and dopamine. In this study, we prepared carbon fiber electrodes modified with surface decorated gold nanoparticles to directly measure the electrochemical response signals in the serum of mice before and after gavage with different types of Baijiu.

Influenza A/H9 viruses circulate worldwide in wild and domestic avian species, continuing to evolve and posing a zoonotic risk. A substantial increase in human infections with A/H9N2 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIVs) and the emergence of novel reassortants carrying A/H9N2-origin internal genes has occurred in recent years. Different names have been used to describe the circulating and emerging A/H9 lineages.

Background: Metastasis is the leading cause of mortality in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and angiogenesis is a crucial factor in tumor invasion and metastasis. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play regulatory functions in various biological processes in tumor cells, however, the roles of lncRNAs in CRC-associated angiogenesis remain to be elucidated in CRC, as do the underlying mechanisms.

Methods: We used bioinformatics to screen differentially expressed lncRNAs from TCGA database.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are abundant and heterogeneous stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment, which play important roles in regulating tumor progression and therapy resistance by transferring exosomes to cancer cells. However, how CAFs modulate esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) progression and radioresistance remains incompletely understood. The expression of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) in CAFs was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 174 ESCC patients who underwent surgery and 78 pretreatment biopsy specimens of ESCC patients who underwent definitive chemoradiotherapy.

The sustained circulation of H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) poses a significant threat for contributing to a new pandemic. Given the temporal and spatial uncertainty in the antigenicity of H9N2 AIVs, the immune protection efficiency of vaccines remains challenging. By developing an antigenicity prediction method for H9N2 AIVs, named PREDAC-H9, the global antigenic landscape of H9N2 AIVs was mapped.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is closely related to a variety of human cancers, which may provide huge potential biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, the aberrant expression of most lncRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive. This study aims to explore the clinical significance and potential mechanism of lncRNA ABHD11 antisense RNA 1 (ABHD11-AS1) in the colorectal cancer.

The interaction between influenza A virus (IAV) and host proteins is an important process that greatly influences viral replication and pathogenicity. PB2 protein is a subunit of viral ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) complex playing distinct roles in viral transcription and replication. BAG6 (BCL2-associated athanogene 6) as a multifunctional host protein participates in physiological and pathological processes.

The interaction between migratory birds and domestic waterfowl facilitates viral co-infections, leading to viral reassortment and the emergence of novel viruses. In 2022, samples were collected from duck farms around Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China, which is located within the East Asia-Australasia flyway. Three strains of H4N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) were isolated.

Article Synopsis
  • Since 2020, clade 2.3.4.4b avian influenza H5N8 and H5N1 viruses have rapidly spread worldwide, threatening both poultry and public health.
  • A significant genotype change in the H5N8 virus in 2020 led to the emergence of a new H5N1 variant, which caused major outbreaks in Europe and North America during the 2021/2022 wave.
  • The study highlights that bird migration patterns and the genetic evolution of viruses in regions like Egypt are key factors in the spread of these viruses, suggesting strategies for effective monitoring and prevention of future outbreaks.

Background: The duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is one of the principal natural hosts of influenza A virus (IAV), harbors almost all subtypes of IAVs and resists to many IAVs which cause extreme virulence in chicken and human. However, the response of duck's adaptive immune system to IAV infection is poorly characterized due to lack of a detailed gene map of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).

Results: We herein reported a chromosome-scale Beijing duck assembly by integrating Nanopore, Bionano, and Hi-C data.

Gut microbiota-derived metabolites are important for the replication and pathogenesis of many viruses. However, the roles of bacterial metabolites in swine enteric coronavirus (SECoV) infection remain poorly understood. Recent studies show that SECoVs infection significantly alters the composition of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing gut microbiota.

H3N8 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in China caused two confirmed human infections in 2022, followed by a fatal case reported in 2023. H3N8 viruses are widespread in chicken flocks; however, the zoonotic features of H3N8 viruses are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that H3N8 viruses were able to infect and replicate efficiently in organotypic normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells and lung epithelial (Calu-3) cells.

Live poultry markets (LPMs) are regarded as hubs for avian influenza virus (AIV) transmission in poultry and are a major risk factor in human AIV infections. We performed an AIV surveillance study at a wholesale LPM, where different poultry species were sold in separate stalls, and nine retail LPMs, which received poultry from the wholesale LPM but where different poultry species were sold in one stall, in Guangdong province from 2017 to 2019. A higher AIV isolation rate was observed at the retail LPMs than the wholesale LPM.

Influenza A viruses in animal reservoirs repeatedly cross species barriers to infect humans. Dogs are the closest companion animals to humans, but the role of dogs in the ecology of influenza viruses is unclear. H3N2 avian influenza viruses were transmitted to dogs around 2006 and have formed stable lineages.
