Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the use of remote patient monitoring (RPM) in patients on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) and the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology in peritoneal dialysis (SONG-PD) clinical outcomes.
Methods: A prospective and multicenter cohort study was conducted on patients with advanced chronic kidney disease on APD, recruited at 16 Spanish Hospitals, between June 1 and December 31, 2021. Patients were divided into 2 cohorts, namely patients on APD with RPM (APD-RPM) and patients on APD without RPM.
Nanotechnology is a developing field that has boomed in recent years due to the multiple qualities of nanoparticles (NPs), one of which is their antimicrobial capacity. We propose that NPs anchored with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) have antibacterial properties and could constitute an alternative tool in this field. To this end, the antimicrobial effects of three quaternised NPs anchored with DMAEMA were studied.

COVID-19 can cause pneumonia and organ injury. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been associated with increased mortality in previous epidemics, but there is a paucity of data regarding actual risks for non-dialysis CKD patients with COVID-19.

Adaptations can reflect similarities in types of injuries or issues of provider safety and that arise in military and some civilian emergencies. Because more experience with such incidents has been gained in the United States, most of the literature on this topic discusses emergency medical systems that differ from the ones operating in the autonomous communities of Spain, where varying resources and procedures are mandated by local authorities charged with preparing for emergencies.

This study was devised to follow-up volume status of an incident population on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to relate this to patient-relevant outcomes.
Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: This prospective cohort study was implemented in 135 study centers from 28 countries.
Interference of conventional peritoneal dialysis fluids (cPDFs) with peritoneal membrane cell functions may be attributed to the dialysis fluid's low pH, high glucose concentration, and/or the presence of glucose degradation products (GDPs), the last of which leads to higher levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). It has been suggested that the peritoneal membrane might be better preserved by using biocompatible solutions, including cancer antigetn 125 (CA125). This prospective, open-label, multicentre, randomized, controlled, cross-over phase IV study compared the in vivo biocompatibility of a neutral-pH, low-GDP peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution (balance) with a cPDF in automated PD (APD) patients.

It is usually calculated by the Watson anthropometric formula, although the use of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is becoming increasingly widespread. Measuring V with both methods can at times produce quite different results.

The development of alternative therapeutic compounds is the focus of extensive research, so novel nanoparticles (NPs) with activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria should be developed. In this study, the antibacterial activity of quaternary ammonium polyethyleneimine (QA-PEI) NPs was evaluated against Streptococcus viridans, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Escherichia coli.

Dialysis efficacy can also be measured with Kt, but no experience exists in PD, so there is no reference/target value for Kt that must be achieved in these patients to be considered adequately dialyzed. We evaluated the efficacy of PD with Kt/V using Watson formula and BIS for V calculation, assessed hydration status in a PD unit by data obtained by BIS, and attempted to find a reference Kt from the Kt/V previously obtained by BIS.

In this report, we provide evidence for the in vitro and in vivo participation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in the signaling pathway leading to peritoneal fibrosis during PD. Exposure to high-glucose PD fluids (PDFs) increases damage and fibrosis markers in both isolated rat peritoneal mesothelial cells and in the peritoneum of rats after chronic dialysis.

Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis can seriously worsen prognosis. We report the case of a woman with subclinical acute intermittent porphyria and chronic hepatitis incidentally diagnosed due to transaminase elevation on laboratory analysis.

We studied the toxic effects of high glucose (50 mmol/L and 83 mmol/L) and its reversal by atorvastatin (0.5 - 5 μmol/L) on cultures of rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs).
