Case Report: Fatal Scorpion Envenomation in a Shuar Child by Tityus cisandinus from Amazonian Ecuador: A Call for Specific Antivenom Availability in the Amazon Basin.

Envenomation by scorpions belonging to the genus Tityus can be life threatening in the Americas, particularly in the Amazon Basin. We report a 4-month-old Ecuadorean boy of Shuar origin stung by a scorpion identified as Tityus cisandinus in the Amazonian province of Morona Santiago, presenting with pulmonary edema and systemic inflammation. We administered immunotherapy using the scorpion antivenom available in Ecuador, of Mexican origin (anti-Centruroides).

Scorpion envenoming in Morona Santiago, Amazonian Ecuador: Molecular phylogenetics confirms involvement of the Tityus obscurus group.

Scorpion envenoming by species in the genus Tityus is hereby reported from rural locations in the Amazonian province of Morona Santiago, southeastern Ecuador. Twenty envenoming cases (18 patients under 15 years of age) including one death (a 4-year-old male) were recorded at the Macas General Hospital, Morona Santiago, between January 2015 and December 2016 from the counties of Taisha (n=17), Huamboyo (n=1), Palora (n=1), and Logroño (n=1). An additional fatality from 2014 (a 3-year-old female from Nayantza, Taisha county) is also reported.

[Comparison of colon-cleansing methods in preparation for colonoscopy-comparative of solutions of mannitol and sodium picosulfate].

Objectives: The purpose of the present study is to compare intestinal preparation with mannitol and sodium picosulphate, assessing patient's acceptance, side effects and cleaning capacity.

Material And Methods: This is a prospective, nom randomized, blind study, in which the evaluator had no information about the preparation applied. The sample obtained was divided into two groups according to the bowel preparation applied, with 153 patients prepared with 10% mannitol and 84 patients with sodium picosulfate.

Current dilemmas in the assessment of suffering in palliative care.

Objective: Although relief from suffering is essential in healthcare and palliative care, few efforts have aimed at defining, operationalizing, and developing standards for its detection, assessment, and relief. In order to accurately explore and identify factors that contribute to suffering, more attention needs to be focused on quality assessment and measurement, not only for assessment purposes but also to test the effectiveness of interventions in relieving suffering. The scope of the present paper is to discuss the strategies that aid in the detection and assessment of the suffering experience in patients with chronic illnesses and/or in palliative care settings, and the dilemmas commonly encountered regarding the quality of available assessment measures.

Predictors of suffering in advanced cancer.

Context: Suffering is a complex experience. Identifying its predictors is useful to signal at-risk patients.

Objective: To identify suffering predictors in patients with advanced cancer in palliative care.
