Background: Yucatan stands out as the state with the highest prevalence of urolithiasis in Mexico, placing significant demands on healthcare services, such as consultation and surgical intervention. Staghorn calculi are related to recurrent urinary tract infections, and their management is always surgical. The stone-free rate is a parameter used to measure the success of surgery, with residual stones considered those persisting four weeks after surgical management.

Urolithiasis is a prevalent urological condition characterized by stone formation in the urinary tract, but stones weighing more than 100 g are rare. The Mayan and Mestizo populations in Yucatan have been identified as being at an increased risk of urolithiasis because of the coexistence of environmental, genetic, metabolic, and lifestyle risk factors. The patient's occupation may play a significant role in enhancing these factors.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is an uncommon chronic granulomatous infection of renal parenchyma. XGP is often associated with long-term urinary tract obstruction due to stones and infection. We aimed to analyze the clinical, laboratory, and microbial culture profiles from bladder and kidney urine of patients who were diagnosed with XGP.

Purpose: To determine the risk factors associated with major complications in patients with histologically confirmed Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) who underwent nephrectomy.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was performed including patients who underwent nephrectomy between 2018 and 2022 with histopathological diagnosis of XGP. Clinical and laboratory parameters at the initial presentation were evaluated.

Background: Diagnosis of emphysematous pyelonephritis has been described around the world for some decades, frequently associated with and other anaerobic, gas-forming bacteria and mostly in patients living with diabetes. We present a case report of emphysematous pyelonephritis in a non-diabetic patient caused by as well as a brief literature review to draw attention to this rare pathogen as a cause of pyelonephritis.

Case Summary: A 38-year-old female presented with fever, severe pain in the right flank and changes in urinary habits.

Background: The prevalence of urolithiasis is 7-10% and has increased over the past years. Simple nephrectomy is, therefore, indicated when renal exclusion is associated with recurrent urinary tract infections and/or chronic pain.

Objective: The aim of the study was to describe the surgical experience of laparoscopic nephrectomy (LPN) due to urolithiasis in Mexican South-east and which factors can predispose conversion to open surgery.

Context: Although miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL) and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) are both options for treating >1cm kidney stones, controversies exist on whether one is more effective and safer than the other.

Objective: To systematically appraise randomized trials comparing the effectiveness and safety of mPCNL and RIRS for treating >1cm kidney stones.

Evidence Acquisition: A systematic search on PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.

The Spanish version of the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life (WISQOL) questionnaire was developed and validated. A double-back translation of the WISQOL was conducted and syntactic amendments were made, resulting in the Spanish version of the WISQOL (S-WISQOL) which then went through a readability analysis. Stone formers from two hospitals in Mexico (Merida and Monterrey) filled in the S-WISQOL and the Short Form 36 (SF36).
