Collective motion of energy depot active disks.

In the present work we have studied collectives of active disks with an energy depot, moving in the two-dimensional plane and interacting an excluded volume. The energy depot accounts for the extraction of energy taking place at the level of each particle in order to perform self-propulsion, included in an underdamped Langevin dynamics. We show that this model undergoes a flocking transition, exhibiting some of the key features of the Vicsek model, namely, band formation and giant number fluctuations.

Background: Mesoionic compound MI-D possesses important biological activities, such as antiinflammatory and antitumoral against melanoma and hepatocarcinoma. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and common central nervous system tumor in adults. Currently, chemotherapies are not entirely effective, and the survival of patients diagnosed with glioblastoma is extremely short.

Core outcome sets for trials of interventions to prevent and to treat multimorbidity in adults in low and middle-income countries: the COSMOS study.

Introduction: The burden of multimorbidity is recognised increasingly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), creating a strong emphasis on the need for effective evidence-based interventions. Core outcome sets (COS) appropriate for the study of multimorbidity in LMICs do not presently exist. These are required to standardise reporting and contribute to a consistent and cohesive evidence-base to inform policy and practice.

Multimorbidity and acute infectious diseases in urban and semi-urban settings in Peru: A mixed-methods study.

Background: The co-occurrence of chronic diseases and acute infectious events exacerbates disability and diminishes quality of life, yet research in Low- and Middle-Income countries is scarce. We aimed to investigate the relationship between infectious events and multimorbidity in resource-constrained settings.

Methods: We conducted a sequential mixed-method study in Lima and Tumbes, Peru, with participants having multimorbidity from the CRONICAS Cohort Study.

Long-Term Survival and Immune Response Dynamics in Melanoma Patients Undergoing TAPCells-Based Vaccination Therapy.

Cancer vaccines present a promising avenue for treating immune checkpoint blockers (ICBs)-refractory patients, fostering immune responses to modulate the tumor microenvironment. We revisit a phase I/II trial using Tumor Antigen-Presenting Cells (TAPCells) (NCT06152367), an autologous antigen-presenting cell vaccine loaded with heat-shocked allogeneic melanoma cell lysates. Initial findings showcased TAPCells inducing lysate-specific delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions, correlating with prolonged survival.

Self-Organized States from Solutions of Active Ring Polymers in Bulk and under Confinement.

In the present work, we study, by means of numerical simulations, the structural and dynamical behavior of a suspension of active ring polymers in bulk and under lateral confinement. At high activity, when changing the distance between the confining planes and the polymers' density, we identify the emergence of a self-organized dynamical state, characterized by the coexistence of slowly diffusing clusters of rotating disks and faster rings moving in between them. We further assess that self-organization is robust in a range of polymer sizes, and we identify a critical value of the activity, necessary to trigger cluster formation.

Pharmaco-disparities in heart failure: a survey of the affordability of guideline recommended therapy in 10 countries.

Aims: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is treatable but guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) may not be affordable or accessible to people living with the disease.

Methods And Results: In this cross-sectional survey, we investigated the price, affordability, and accessibility of four pivotal classes of HFrEF GDMT: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) or angiotensin-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNI); beta-blockers; mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA); and sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). We sampled online or community pharmacies in 10 countries across a range of World Bank income groups, assessing mean 30 day retail prescription prices, affordability relative to gross national income per capita per month, and accessibility.

Gender and addiction and other mental disorders comorbidity: sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment differences.

The co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders (OMD) is assumed to be high, but the details are uncertain in Spain. The objective of the present study was to know the prevalence of this comorbidity, as well as the pharmacological treatment, both in specific addiction treatment networks and in mental health networks, with a gender perspective. Observational, multicenter study, with a randomized sample, of patients under treatment for SUD or OMD in Spain (N = 1783).

Profile of patients with post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis in a tertiary care hospital in Brazil.

Bronchiectasis are abnormal permanently dilated bronchi which lead to chronic cough and other respiratory symptoms. Though tuberculosis (TB) is a common cause of bronchiectasis, data on this association are scarce. Transinfratemporal Fossa Transposition of the Temporalis Muscle Flap for Skull Base Reconstruction after Endoscopic Expanded Nasopharyngectomy: Anatomical Study and Clinical Application.

 Temporalis muscle flap (TMF) is widely used in traditional skull base surgery, but its application in endoscopic skull base surgery remains rarely reported. We aimed to investigate the surgical anatomy and clinical application of TMF for reconstruction of skull base defects after expanded endoscopic nasopharyngectomy.  Nine fresh cadaver heads (18 sides) were used for endoscopic dissection at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the United States.

Background: Reconstruction of extensive palatal defects in growing patients aims to restore speech intelligibility and swallowing function while avoiding excessive scarring formation that may cause growth disturbances in the palate and midface region. Free flaps transfer healthy, well-vascularized tissue to the defect area, and their combination with pharyngeal flaps allow for restoration of the velopharyngeal function. Perioperative chemotherapy in locally advanced gastric cancer in Chile: from evidence to daily practice.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a leading cause of cancer death in Chile. Although recommended in international guidelines since 2006, perioperative chemotherapy was not available to patients in the public health system in Chile until 2016. We conducted an observational study to assess the feasibility of this strategy in public hospitals in Chile (Observational Study of Perioperative Chemotherapy in Locally Advanced Gastric Cancer - PRECISO).

Introduction: Social vulnerability is a known determinant of health in respiratory diseases. Our aim was to identify whether there are socio-demographic factors among COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Spain and their potential impact on health outcomes during the hospitalization.

Methods: A multicentric retrospective case series study based on administrative databases that included all COVID-19 cases admitted in 19 Spanish hospitals from 1 March to 15 April 2020.

Background: Reconstruction after endoscopic endonasal approaches is a key element. Lower clivus reconstruction is difficult and most of the times a pedicled flap is not available. As the complexity and the dimensions of the exposure increase, a reliable reconstruction technique becomes more and more important.

Mangroves protect coastal economic activity from hurricanes.

This paper evaluates whether mangroves can mitigate the impact of hurricanes on economic activity. The paper assembles a regionwide panel dataset that measures local economic activity using nightlights, potential hurricane damages using a detailed wind field model, and mangrove protection by mapping the width of mangrove forests on the path to the coast. The results show that hurricanes have negative short-run effects on economic activity, with losses likely concentrated in coastal lowlands that are exposed to both wind and storm surge hazards.

[Consensus on acute ischemic stroke].

Stroke is the third cause of death and the first cause of disability in Argentina. Ischemic events constitute 80% of cases. It requires the implementation of systematized protocols that allow reducing the time of care, morbidity and mortality.
