Study Design: A prospective experimental study.

Purpose: This biomechanical in vitro study aimed to examine the extent to which the use of a rod persuader (RP) leads to additional mechanical stress on the screw-rod system and determine its influence on the bony anchoring of primary pedicle screws.

Overview Of Literature: Degenerative spine diseases and deformities are the most common indications for the stabilization and fusion of spinal segments.

Background: Overview of the literature - Fractures of the C1 constitute 3%-13% of all cervical spine injuries in adults. Most isolated C1 fractures are stable and can be treated nonoperatively with external immobilization. Traditional surgical options for C1 fracture treatment are occiput-to-C2 fusion or C1 with lateral mass screws (LMSs).

Purpose: Since an increase in the occurrence of native vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is expected and reliable projections are missing, it is urgent to provide a reliable forecast model and make it a part of future health care considerations.

Methods: Comprehensive nationwide data provided by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany were used to forecast total numbers and incidence rates (IR) of VO as a function of age and gender until 2040. Projections were done using autoregressive integrated moving average model on historical data from 2005 to 2019 in relation to official population projections from 2020 to 2040.

Article Synopsis
  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis commonly affects the lower back, leading to pain and reduced quality of life, with various surgical options available for treatment.
  • This study analyzes data from the German spine registry, comparing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) techniques in 602 patients treated between January 2017 and May 2021, focusing on demographics and complication rates.
  • The findings showed that while PLIF was more commonly performed and had patients with more severe conditions, both procedures resulted in similar patient outcomes, indicating a need for further research to better compare these surgical methods.

The spine is a common location for the development of primary and metastatic tumors, spinal metastases being the most common tumor in the spine. Spinal surgery in obesity is challenging due to difficulties with anesthesia, intravenous access, positioning, and physical access during surgery. The objective was to investigate the effect of obesity on perioperative complications by discharge in patients undergoing surgery for spinal metastases.

Background: The notion that all acute hip fractures are a surgical entity requiring either surgical fracture fixation or hip replacement represents a historic dogma, particularly within the orthopaedic community of the United States. The present study from a European regional trauma center was designed to challenge the notion that stable and undisplaced femoral neck fractures represent an absolute indication for surgical management.

Methods: The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that stable and undisplaced femoral neck fractures of the Garden types 1 and 2 can be safely managed nonoperatively.

Background: The recurrence rate in lumbar disc herniations (LDH) has been reported between 5 and 25%. There are only few data about this phenomenon that occurs within days of the initial operation. We analyse early recurrent LDH by analysis of data from the German Spine register.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates predictors of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt dependency after non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), identifying factors such as the amount of subarachnoid blood and the occurrence of vasospasm as significant.
  • A retrospective analysis of 107 patient cases from 2012-2014 revealed that 48% of patients requiring shunt treatment displayed higher rates of vasospasm and greater subarachnoid blood volume.
  • Findings suggest that monitoring for these predictors could aid physicians in deciding on treatment approaches for patients with SAH.

To compare the resolution rate of hydrocephalus after endoscopy (predominantly endoscopic third ventriculostomy [ETV]) using flexible endoscopes during a 5-year period in patients with a permeable and a nonpermeable subarachnoid space (SAS).  We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the videos and records of 150 hydrocephalic patients chosen randomly who underwent ETV (and other endoscopic procedures) with a flexible endoscope. The patients were classified into two groups based on the neuroendoscopic findings.

Objectives: The purpose of this work is to elucidate the efficacy of endoscopic basal cisterns exploration, biopsy, and third ventriculostomy (ETV) in patients with basal cistern meningitis and arachnoiditis.

Materials And Methods: The cases and videos of all patients in whom flexible neuroendoscopy was performed during the period of January 2005-June 2012 at the University Hospital 'Dr. Ignacio Morones Prieto' in San Luis Potosí, México.

Objectives: Throughout the world, 45 000 kidney transplants are performed per year. Graft and overall survival vary according to the type of donor (living or deceased donor). Anastomosis of a short renal vein with iliac vein or common external iliac vein has been associated with technical problems such as angulation of the vein or tension on the anastomosis, which could limit visualization and control of bleeding from the graft.

Objectives: To describe our experience and the results obtained in performing transventricular brainstem biopsy with the use of flexible neuroendoscops.

Methods: We identified patients who underwent a neuroendoscopic procedure with brainstem lesion biopsy to obtain histopathologic diagnosis and to treat obstructive hydrocephalus. All patients had follow-up examinations at months 1, 3, 6, and 12 postsurgery and then annually.

Objectives: Our main objective was to evaluate whether serum hypocalcaemia on the third day [defined as < 2.1 mmol/l (8.5 mg/dl)] is a prognostic factor for early mortality after moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Object: The favorable effect of statin treatment after traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been shown in animal studies and is probably true in humans as well. The objective of this study was to determine whether acute statin treatment following TBI could reduce inflammatory cytokines and improve functional outcomes in humans.

Methods: The authors performed a double-blind randomized clinical trial in patients with moderate to severe TBI.

Background: Management of communicating hydrocephalus associated with infectious meningitis and arachnoiditis of the basal cisterns can be challenging if no microorganism or pathological diagnosis is established. The purpose of our series is to elucidate the efficacy of endoscopic basal cistern exploration, biopsy, and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in patients with basal cistern meningitis and hydrocephalus.

Methods: Between 2005 and 2010, all patients who underwent transventricular endoscopic exploration biopsy and biopsy of the basal cisterns were analyzed and prospectively followed up.
