Early malnutrition has been significantly associated with chronic diseases later in life. The finding of metabolic abnormalities in individuals with malnutrition in fetal life and early in postnatal life may have important public health implications in developing countries, although only a few studies have examined the relationship between body weight at the first year of life and later metabolic abnormalities. We assessed the effects of malnutrition during the first year of life (independent of birth weight) on several metabolic parameters in young men.

There are different equations to estimate insulin sensitivity by using OGTT with a reasonable approximation to whole body sensitivity obtained with the glucose clamp. Further work is needed to address their role in clinical practice as markers of the metabolic syndrome and predictors for cardiovascular disease. In the present study, we determined plasma glucose and insulin values during an OGTT test in 144 overweight and obese individuals.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes diagnosed before the age of 40 years (early-onset disease) in a nationwide, population-based study.

Methods: Using a multistage sampling procedure, we enrolled a representative sample of Mexican urban adults aged 20 to 69 years. Weight, height, blood pressure, and plasma levels of glucose, insulin, and other metabolic parameters were measured in all subjects.
