Conserved in female reproduction across all mammalian species is the estrous cycle and its regulation by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, a collective of intersected hormonal events that are crucial for ensuring uterine fertility. Nonetheless, knowledge of the direct mediators that synchronously shape the uterine microenvironment for successive yet distinct events, such as the transit of sperm and support for progressive stages of preimplantation embryo development, remain principally deficient. Toward understanding the timed endometrial outputs that permit luminal events as directed by the estrous cycle, we used Bovidae as a model system to uniquely surface sample and study temporal shifts to in vivo endometrial transcripts that encode for proteins destined to be secreted.

We assessed EV-D68 epidemiology and phylogenetics among children aged ≤9 years hospitalized with severe acute respiratory illnesses at five sites in Panama and El Salvador during 2012-2013. Respiratory specimens positive for enterovirus or rhinovirus were tested by real-time RT-PCR for EV-D68, and partial VP1 gene sequences were determined. Of 715 enrolled children, 17 from sites in both countries were EV-D68-positive and commonly had a history of asthma or wheezing.

A 6-year-old Standardbred mare was presented at 339 days of gestation for investigation of abnormal abdominal distension and ventral edema. Transrectal palpation and ultrasound examination revealed the uterus to be enlarged with an excessive volume of fetal fluid, characteristic of hydrops. Gradual transcervical drainage of 55 L of allantoic fluid over 45 minutes, with concurrent intravenous fluid therapy followed by assisted vaginal delivery, resulted in the birth of a live foal with long-term survival.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of dodecyltrichlorosilane (DTS) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on silica are studied by molecular dynamics simulations at 298 K and 1 bar. The coverage (number of alkylsilane molecules per surface area) is systematically varied. The results yield insight into the properties of the alkylsilane SAMs, which complement experimental studies from the literature.

We have measured experimental adsorption isotherms of water in zeolite LTA4A, and studied the regeneration process by performing subsequent adsorption cycles after degassing at different temperatures. We observed incomplete desorption at low temperatures, and cation rearrangement at successive adsorption cycles. We also developed a new molecular simulation force field able to reproduce experimental adsorption isotherms in the range of temperatures between 273 K and 374 K.

Increasing the resistance to humid environments is mandatory for the implementation of isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (IRMOFs) in industry. To date, the causes behind the sensitivity of [Zn(4)(μ(4)-O)(μ-bdc)(3)](8)(IRMOF-1; bdc=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) to water remain still open. A multiscale scheme that combines Monte Carlo simulations, density functional theory and first-principles Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics on IRMOF-1 was employed to unravel the underlying atomistic mechanism responsible for lattice disruption.

The adsorption of several quadrupolar and nonpolar gases on the Metal Organic Framework Cu-BTC has been studied by combining experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. Four main adsorption sites for this structure have been identified: site I close to the copper atoms, site I' in the bigger cavities, site II located in the small octahedral cages, and site III at the windows of the four open faces of the octahedral cage. Our simulations identify the octahedral cages (sites II and III) and the big cages (site I') as the preferred positions for adsorption, while site I, near the copper atoms, remains empty over the entire range of pressures analyzed due to its reduced accessibility.
