Although it is well established that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with fetal overgrowth in singleton pregnancies, little is known about its role in twins. We aimed to explore the relationship between GDM and the longitudinal fetal growth in twin pregnancies. This was a retrospective matched cohort study of GDM and non-GDM twin pregnancies delivered ≥36 weeks without other complications.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is well known to be associated with fetal overgrowth and short- or long-term adverse outcomes in singleton pregnancies; however, its relationship with twin pregnancies remains controversial, posing challenges for clinical management. Despite the heterogeneity in GDM diagnosis and racial differences among populations, two critical issues remain unaddressed. The first issue is methodological, specifically whether data on twins have been analyzed using appropriate approaches.

Nanoparticles of neodymium oxide (NPs-NdO) can induce respiratory-related diseases, including lung tissue injury when entering the organism through the respiratory tract. However, it is currently unclear whether they can induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung tissue and the related mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the function of circ_009773 in the process of EMT induced by NPs-NdO in lung tissue from in vivo as well as in vitro experiments.

Background: Birthweight is the most common and accessible parameter in assessing neonatal perinatal outcomes and in evaluating the intrauterine environment globally. Infants born too large or too small not only may alter the maternal mode of delivery but also may face other long-term disorders, such as metabolic diseases and neurodevelopmental delay. Studies have revealed different growth profiles of large-for-gestational-age and small-for-gestational-age fetuses in singleton pregnancies.

Background: In China, the rates of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding are low. The high cesarean delivery rates further contribute to low breastfeeding outcomes. Skin-to-skin contact, a key component of early essential newborn care, is known to be associated with improved breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity; however, the necessary duration has not been subjected to a randomized control trial.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in four Chinese hospitals to examine how the length of skin-to-skin contact (SSC) after cesarean sections affects breastfeeding outcomes among 679 participants.
  • The results showed that longer SSC durations significantly increased the rates of early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF), particularly with at least 90 minutes of contact leading to the highest EIBF rates (74.5%).
  • While SSC greatly improved EIBF rates, the study found no significant link between SSC duration and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) rates at hospital discharge, suggesting that SSC is essential for promoting EIBF, even with shorter durations of at least 30 minutes.

Background: Early essential newborn care (EENC) is a package of evidence-based and cost-effective interventions delivered around birth mainly including delayed cord clamping, immediate and sustained skin-to-skin contact, and early initiation of exclusive breastfeeding. EENC is proven effective in promoting breastfeeding and improving women's and newborns' health. However, there is little evidence on implementation of EENC on newborns born by cesarean section in China.

The increased incidence of macrosomia has caused an enormous burden after the transition from the almost 40-year one-child policy to the universal two-child policy in 2015 and further to the three-child policy in 2021 in China. However, studies on risk factors of macrosomia in multipara under the new fertility policy in China are limited. We aim to explore the incidence and risk factors for macrosomia in multipara to provide the scientific basis for preventing macrosomia in multipara.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) brings health issues for both mothers and offspring, and GDM prevention is as important as GDM management. It was shown that a history of GDM was significantly associated with a higher maternal risk for GDM recurrence. The incidence of GDM recurrence was unclear because of the incidence of second-child was low before 2016 in China.

Studies reported that women in a low-risk cohort with stage 1 hypertension defined as 130-139 mmHg/80-89 mmHg, according to the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association, are more likely to develop into preeclampsia than women with normotensive in the early gestation. In this study, the authors investigated whether preeclampsia was more likely to occur in stage 1 hypertensive women compared to the normotensive pregnant women in a high-risk cohort, which was based on the randomized controlled trial of "Low-dose Aspirin in the Prevention of Preeclampsia in China." Meanwhile, the authors further evaluated the preventive effect of aspirin for preeclampsia in stage 1 hypertension subset.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has become an epidemic and has caused a tremendous healthy and economic burden in China, especially after the "two-child policy" put into effect on October 2015. The prevalence of GDM has continued to increase during the past few decades and is likely to see a further rise in the future. The public health impact of GDM is becoming more apparent in China and it might lead to the development of chronic non-communicable diseases in the long-term for both mothers and their children.
