Purpose: Analyse the influence of the nutritional status of older patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery on postoperative complications, mortality and mean length of hospital stay.

Methods: We performed a longitudinal observational study including patients older than 80 years who underwent emergency surgery by the general surgery service for abdominal pathology, who were followed by the geriatrics service between September 2018 and May 2021. Malnutrition was diagnosed using Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, classifying patients as malnourished and normonourished.

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of prehabilitation in elderly patients (80+) undergoing colorectal cancer surgery at a tertiary hospital from 2018 to 2022.
  • Out of 184 patients, 126 underwent surgery, revealing high frailty rates in octogenarians (50%) and nonagenarians (86%) and recorded a low rate of post-surgical complications and mortality.
  • Prehabilitation included physical exercise, nutritional support, and other treatments, showing that prehabilitation for very old patients can yield positive results in surgical settings.

Background: Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is an imaging technique performed bedside. To date, few published studies have reported the usefulness of multiorgan POCUS in Geriatrics. The objective of this study was to describe the utility of multiorgan POCUS in the care of older adults admitted to geriatric care settings.

Objective: To describe the differences according to mental status at admission on the care process and 30-day outcomes in hip fracture patients, mainly regarding the use of rehabilitation resources and anti-osteoporotic medication, by analysing data from the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC, "Registro Nacional de Fracturas de Cadera" in Spanish).

Methods: We analysed prospectively collected data from a cohort of patients admitted participating in the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) in 76 Spanish hospitals between 2017 and 2019. We classified participants using Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ), defining two groups: patients with ≤2 SPMSQ score and patients with >2 SPMSQ score.

Purpose: A study analyzing the application of a protocol of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in older patients with lymphoma was carried out to allow frailty-based patient classification and individualized treatment.

Methods: Lymphoma patients older than 70 years referred to the Geriatric Clinic at a tertiary hospital between May 2016 and March 2021 were included. The assessment protocol included comorbidity, polypharmacy, nutritional, functional, and mental status, geriatric syndromes, and life expectancy.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to design and validate a predictive model for 30-day mortality in a cohort of patients from the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) with variables collected at the Emergency Department.

Methods: Retrospective study of a prospective database of hip fracture patients ⩾75 years old between 1 January 2017 and 30 September 2019. Patient characteristics, type of fracture and osteoprotective medication were collected at the Emergency Department.

Introduction: The National Registry of Hip Fractures (RNFC) facilitates knowledge of hip fracture process in Spain to clinicians and managers and is useful to the reduction of the results variability, including the destination at discharge after the hip fracture.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe functional recovery units (URFs) use for patients with hip fracture included in the RNFC and to compare the results of the different autonomous communities (AC).

Material And Methods: An observational, prospective and multicenter study of several hospitals in Spain.

Objective: The primary objective was to describe the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of centenarians with fragility hip fracture and compare them to other age groups. The secondary objective was to determine the variables associated with length of stay, in-hospital mortality and 30-day mortality.

Materials And Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry.

Introduction: There are few studies on Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) that evaluate older patients after a hip fracture (HF) through comprehensive geriatric assessment. We aim to determine these patients' characteristics, outcomes, and prescribed treatments.

Methods: A retrospective observational study of a cohort of patients older than 65 years admitted with HFs to an orthogeriatric unit between February 25th (2013) and December 16th (2016).

Objective: to assess the capacityof the G8 questionnaire for the detection of frailty inpatients over 75 years of age with metastatic or castrationresistant prostate cancer and the relationshipof the results of this questionnaire with clinical variables, laboratory data, quality of life, functional statusand comorbidity.

Material And Methods: Patients over the ageof 75 with metastatic or castration-resistant prostatecancer were evaluated using the G8 questionnaire. Those with a G8 15 were subjected to comprehensivegeriatric assessment in order to evaluate the abilityof this questionnaire to predict frailty.

Background: Clinical management in orthogeriatric units and outcome indicators are similar for extracapsular fragility hip fractures, without discriminating between subtrochanteric and pertrochanteric fractures.

Hypothesis: Geriatric patients, 75 years or older, with subtrochanteric fractures have worse clinical and functional outcomes than those with pertrochanteric fractures.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective observational study of data prospectively collected by the Spanish Hip Fracture Registry including patients 75 years or older, admitted for extracapsular hip fractures from January 2017 to June 2019.

Unlabelled: This study was carried out to analyze the evolution of the quality indicators in the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry, after disseminating a series of recommendations based on available clinical practice guidelines to the participating hospitals. Six of the seven proposed quality indicators showed a significant improvement.

Purpose: The Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) arises from the need to know the process and improve the quality of care.

Objective: National hip fracture registries have been established in several countries and recent publications show that the care process has been audited inspecting the representativeness according to quality standards. The aim of this study was to analyse if the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) represents the Spanish population aged 75 and older admitted for hip fractures, and to compare its results regarding the care process with the national average, according to the National Inpatient register (Minimum Basic Dataset, CMBD).

Methods: The 2017-2018 National Minimum Basic Dataset (Conjunto Mínimo Básico de Datos, CMBD) was used as reference.
