Article Synopsis
  • Patients with severe COVID-19 tend to have lung function issues, particularly a reduced forced vital capacity (FVC), often linked to factors like hypoxemia and hand strength.
  • A study analyzed the relationship between various clinical variables and spirometric changes in survivors of severe COVID-19, revealing the influence of vaccination and hospitalization duration.
  • Results showed that being hospitalized for more than 15 days increases the risk of low FVC, while receiving two vaccine doses acts as a protective factor against spirometric alterations.

Article Synopsis
  • Tamoxifen metabolism varies among individuals, categorized into four genetic phenotypes (gPM, gIM, gNM, gUM), but their connection to tamoxifen side effects (TSE) in Mexican Mestizo patients is not well-known.
  • This study involved evaluating 71 women for genetic phenotypes and their relationship to self-reported side effects, finding that hot flashes, arthralgia, headaches, and cramps were common.
  • Although none of the genetic phenotypes predicted TSE, factors like contraceptive use and past chemotherapy were found to be significant predictors, highlighting a gap in pharmacogenetic research for Latin-American populations.

Article Synopsis
  • Several methods for measuring tamoxifen and its metabolites exist, mainly using complex and costly liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), which can be time-consuming and affected by matrix ionization issues.
  • A new, validated method has been developed using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, allowing rapid and efficient quantification of tamoxifen and its active metabolites in just 16 minutes, plus a short re-equilibration time.
  • This new approach is accurate, precise, requires minimal plasma sample, and is particularly beneficial for use in clinical studies and healthcare settings, especially in developing countries.

Aim: To describe delay intervals, their impact on clinical stage and initiation of first oncologic treatment, and evaluate associated factors in breast cancer patients in Yucatan, Mexico, a low-density population region.

Patients & Methods: A retrospective analysis was done of 92 medical records, and bivariate and multivariate models applied to identify associations between healthcare delay and several factors.

Results: System delay accounted for most of the delay (median: 86 days; 61% of delay).

Background: Supracondylar humerus fractures are common in children between 5-7 years of age and more frequent in the males, 90-95% of these fractures are in extension mechanism, the urgency of immediate attention is to prevent complications and sequelae.

Objective: To establish the clinical and epidemiological profile of supracondylar humerus fractures, in a General Regional Hospital from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Yucatan Mexico, during 2011-2013.

Material And Methods: A cross-sectional study.
