Comparative study of selenium (Se) speciation in hyperaccumulator plants offers an interesting challenge from the analytical point of view. In our study the application of a sophisticated sample clean-up procedure and the combination of elemental and molecular mass spectrometric methods led to the identification of several new selenocompounds. The difference between the Se speciation of the primary accumulator Lecythis minor and the secondary accumulator Bertholletia excelsa confirmed the current opinion that the speciation pattern in hyperaccumulator plants is principally related to the mechanism of accumulation and not to taxonomy.

This paper describes an enhanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) strategy for the analysis of a selected group of 56 organic pollutants in wastewater. This group comprises 38 pharmaceuticals and 10 of their most frequent metabolites, 6 pesticides, and 2 disinfectants. The LC-MS methodology applied is based in the use of a hybrid triple-quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometer (QTRAP) in combination with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS).

In this work, a single flow injection multicommuted system using solid-surface fluorescence spectroscopy has been explored for the determination of diphenylamine in apples and pears. The native fluorescence signal of diphenylamine retained on the solid support (C18 silica gel) was used for its determination (lambda(exc)/lambda(em) 291/372 nm). The sample treatment consists of a liquid-liquid extraction with acetonitrile followed by a cleanup step using primary-secondary amines.

A novel, sensitive, and straightforward spectrofluorimetric flow injection method is proposed in this work for the resolution of a binary mixture of two widely used fungicides (thiabendazole and benomyl). The continuous flow methodology is based on the implementation of on-line solid phase extraction (SPE), preconcentration, and separation of both analytes on a surface of C(18) silica gel beads placed just in the flow cell, with solid surface fluorescence detection. A 45- and 25-fold sensitivity enhancement was obtained for benomyl and thiabendazole, respectively (in relation to the liquid phase measurements in the absence of solid support).
