Honey is a natural sweet element that bees make with flower nectar, revered for its distinct flavor, nutritional value, and potential health benefits. Chilean beekeeping has a diverse range of honey varieties, many of which are unique. The quillay ( Molina, soapbark tree) is a Chilean endemic tree whose honey has not been studied in depth.

Introduction: The meningeal lymphatic vessels have been described as a pathway that transports cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid in a unidirectional manner towards the deep cervical lymph nodes. However, these vessels exhibit anatomical and molecular characteristics typical of initial lymphatic vessels, with the absence of surrounding smooth muscle and few or absent valves. Given its structure, this network could theoretically allow for bidirectional motion.

Background: Transverse myelitis (TM) is characterized by acute development of motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunctions due to horizontally diffused inflammation in one or more segments of the spinal cord in the absence of a compressive lesion. The not well-known inflammation process induces demyelination resulting in neurological dysfunction.

Case Presentation: In this case report we used a functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique to evaluate changes in the peri-spinal vascular response induced by a peripheral median nerve electrical stimulation in a patient with chronic transverse myelitis (TM).

Chickpeas are rich sources of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and isoflavonoids. However, the contribution of insoluble-bound phenolics to their antioxidant properties remains unclear. Four varieties of chickpeas were evaluated for the presence of soluble (free and esterified) and insoluble-bound phenolics as well as their antiradical activity, reducing power and inhibition of peroxyl-induced cytotoxicity in human HuH-7 cells.

Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPCD) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the gene. The most affected tissues are the central nervous system and liver, and while significant efforts have been made to understand its neurological component, the pathophysiology of the liver damage remains unclear. In this study, hepatocytes derived from wild type and mice were analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics in conjunction with bioinformatic analysis.

Introduction And Objectives: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a spectrum of liver abnormalities including steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard method to determine the disease stage in NAFLD but is an invasive and risky procedure. Studies have previously reported that changes in intrahepatic fatty acids (FA) composition are related to the progression of NAFLD, mainly in its early stages.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Additional therapies using functional foods and dietary supplements have been investigated and used in clinical practice, showing them to be beneficial. Honeybee pollen from Chile has shown a large concentration of phenolic compounds and high antioxidant activity.

Clinical evidence has revealed that children born from mothers exposed to viral and bacterial pathogens during pregnancy are more likely to suffer various neurological disorders including schizophrenia, autism bipolar disorder, major depression, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. Despite that most research has centered on the impact of prenatal inflammation in neurons and microglia, the potential modifications of astrocytes and neuron-astrocyte communication have received less scrutiny. Here, we evaluated whether prenatally LPS-exposed offspring display alterations in the opening of astrocyte hemichannels and pannexons in the hippocampus, together with changes in neuroinflammation, intracellular Ca and nitric oxide (NO) signaling, gliotransmitter release, cell arborization, and neuronal survival.

Diverse studies have suggested that cytoplasmic inclusions of misfolded α-synuclein in neuronal and glial cells are main pathological features of different α-synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Up to now, most studies have focused on the effects of α-synuclein on neurons, whereas the possible alterations of astrocyte functions and neuron-glia crosstalk have received minor attention. Recent evidence indicates that cellular signaling mediated by hemichannels and pannexons is critical for astroglial function and dysfunction.

Lysosomes are dynamic organelles, which can fuse with a variety of targets and undergo constant regeneration. They can move along microtubules in a retrograde and anterograde fashion by using motor proteins, kinesin and dynein, being main players in extracellular secretion, intracellular components degradation and recycling. Moreover, lysosomes interact with other intracellular organelles to regulate their turnover, such as ER, mitochondria and peroxisomes.

Oligodendrocytes are the myelin forming cells in the central nervous system (CNS). In addition to this main physiological function, these cells play key roles by providing energy substrates to neurons as well as information required to sustain proper synaptic transmission and plasticity at the CNS. The latter requires a fine coordinated intercellular communication with neurons and other glial cell types, including astrocytes.

A mounting body of evidence indicates that adolescents are specially more susceptible to alcohol influence than adults. However, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain poorly understood. Astrocyte-mediated gliotransmission is crucial for hippocampal plasticity and recently, the opening of hemichannels and pannexons has been found to participate in both processes.

Niemann⁻Pick type C (NPC) disease is a rare neurovisceral cholesterol storage disorder that arises from loss of function mutations in the or genes. Soon after birth, some patients present with an aggressive hepatosplenomegaly and cholestatic signs. Histopathologically, the liver presents with large numbers of foam cells; however, their role in disease pathogenesis has not been explored in depth.

Teneurins are a family of highly conserved pair-rule proteins involved in morphogenesis and development of the central nervous system. Their function in adult tissues and in disease is largely unknown. Recent evidence suggests a role for dysregulated expression of Teneurins in human tumors, but systematic investigations are missing.

Fibrosis occurs in skeletal muscle under various pathophysiological conditions such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a devastating disease characterized by fiber degeneration that results in progressive loss of muscle mass, weakness and increased extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. Fibrosis is also observed after skeletal muscle denervation and repeated cycles of damage followed by regeneration. The ECM is synthesized largely by fibroblasts in the muscle connective tissue under normal conditions.
