Control of the Growth of in Cooked Ham through Combinations of Natural Ingredients.

In the ready-to-eat food industry, control is mandatory to ensure the food safety of the products since its presence could cause a disease called listeriosis. The objective of the present study was to carry out a challenge test to verify the efficiency of different combinations of natural antimicrobial ingredients against to be used in ready-to-eat foods. Six different formulations of cooked ham were prepared: a control formulation and five different formulations.

Ring attractor bio-inspired neural network for social robot navigation.

Introduction: We introduce a bio-inspired navigation system for a robot to guide a social agent to a target location while avoiding static and dynamic obstacles. Robot navigation can be accomplished through a model of ring attractor neural networks. This connectivity pattern between neurons enables the generation of stable activity patterns that can represent continuous variables such as heading direction or position.

Reddish Colour in Cooked Ham Is Developed by a Mixture of Protoporphyrins Including Zn-Protoporphyrin and Protoporphyrin IX.

The nitrosyl-heme complex is considered the pigment responsible for the development of reddish colour in cooked hams. However, the same reddish colour was observed in a nitrite-free product elaborated with polyphenols, suggesting the presence of other red pigments that can contribute to generate this colour. In this study, the protoporphyrins composition of the pigment solution obtained from nitrite and nitrite-free cooked hams was analysed using 80% () acetone/water solution for extraction.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease among patients with obesity, with an associated prevalence of 39 to 61% between the population who attends a bariatric surgery evaluation. Online 3-Dimensional Path Planning with Kinematic Constraints in Unknown Environments Using Hybrid A* with Tree Pruning.

In this paper we present an extension to the hybrid A* (HA*) path planner. This extension allows autonomous underwater vehicle (AUVs) to plan paths in 3-dimensional (3D) environments. The proposed approach enables the robot to operate in a safe manner by accounting for the vehicle's motion constraints, thus avoiding collisions and ensuring that the calculated paths are feasible.

Toward Nitrite-Free Curing: Evaluation of a New Approach to Distinguish Real Uncured Meat from Cured Meat Made with Nitrite.

After the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified ingested nitrites and nitrates as "probably carcinogenic to humans" under conditions favoring endogenous nitrosation, several meat products labeled as "made without nitrite" were launched. In order to distinguish uncured products truly made without nitrite from cured products made with any nitrite source (vegetal or mineral), this article presents an approach to detect and quantify nitrite from different origins added to meat. The method consists on the determination of nitrous oxide as a target compound using headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS).

Two-Dimensional Frontier-Based Viewpoint Generation for Exploring and Mapping Underwater Environments.

To autonomously explore complex underwater environments, it is convenient to develop motion planning strategies that do not depend on prior information. In this publication, we present a robotic exploration algorithm for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that is able to guide the robot so that it explores an unknown 2-dimensional (2D) environment. The algorithm is built upon view planning (VP) and frontier-based (FB) strategies.

Autonomous Underwater Navigation and Optical Mapping in Unknown Natural Environments.

We present an approach for navigating in unknown environments while, simultaneously, gathering information for inspecting underwater structures using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). To accomplish this, we first use our pipeline for mapping and planning collision-free paths online, which endows an AUV with the capability to autonomously acquire optical data in close proximity. With that information, we then propose a reconstruction pipeline to create a photo-realistic textured 3D model of the inspected area.

Laparoscopic repair of a lumbar hernia: report of a case and extensive review of the literature.

Lumbar hernias are a protrusion of intra-abdominal contents through a weakness or rupture in the posterior abdominal wall. They are considered to be a rare entity with approximately 300 cases reported in the literature since it was first described by Barbette in 1672. Petit described the inferior lumbar triangle in 1783 and Grynfeltt described the superior lumbar triangle in 1866; both are anatomical boundaries where 95% of lumbar hernias occur, whereas the other 5% are considered to be diffuse.
