Objectives: The aim of this investigation was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dentists in Latin America during the initial year of the outbreak, specifically within the timeframe preceding vaccination campaigns. This study determined the various facets in which dentists were affected and exactly what proportion of them was harmed.

Methods: A comprehensive 33 question survey was distributed across 19 Latin American countries after the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic's presence in the region.

Cyberattacks in the Internet of Things (IoT) are growing exponentially, especially zero-day attacks mostly driven by security weaknesses on IoT networks. Traditional intrusion detection systems (IDSs) adopted machine learning (ML), especially deep Learning (DL), to improve the detection of cyberattacks. DL-based IDSs require balanced datasets with large amounts of labeled data; however, there is a lack of such large collections in IoT networks.

Despite the approval of a considerable number of last generation antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) (only in the last decade, six drugs have gained Food and Drug Administration approval), the global figures of seizure control have seemingly not improved, and available AED can still be regarded as symptomatic treatments. Fresh thinking in AEDs drug discovery, including the development of drugs with novel mechanisms of action, is required to achieve truly innovative antiepileptic medications. The transporter hypothesis proposes that inadequate penetration of AEDs across the blood-brain barrier, caused by increased expression of efflux transporters such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp), contributes to drug-resistant epilepsy.

[Critical contributions on some conceptual elements of the national mental health law based on clinical experience in a center for health and community action in the southern area of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina].

In this article, concepts extracted from the National Mental Health Law 22657 of the Argentine Republic are analyzed, from the perspective of the clinical practice carried out in a Center for Health and Community Action (CeSAC), located in the southern area of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). The following notions are analyzed: perspective of rights in health, accessibility, stigma associated with problematic consumption of substances, interdiscipline and intersectoriality. It is pointed out the scarce relative development that had in the norm the definition of notions linked to community practices in front of the extensive space occupied by the regulation of internment practices.

Antigens to detect the acute phase of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women: standardized comparison.

A key element in any diagnostic technique is the antigen (Ag), a biomarker, but this is usually a protein that has a function to the parasite. Some biological aspects of the Ags and of the Toxoplasma gondii can influence the effectiveness of the diagnosis, as well as the antibody isotype and the characteristics of the assay. A large number of papers have assessed different proteins to distinguish the phases of infection, but the 'indices of effectiveness' differ among reports.

Semiquantitative Dot Blot with the GRA8 antigen to differentiate the stages of toxoplasmosis infection.

In this work we present a novel methodology to differentiate the phases of toxoplasmosis infection: the "semiquantitative Dot Blot". It is a simple technique that does not require expensive equipment, does not involve a long technique development, and can be used in a low-complexity laboratory. Benefits of sonography in diagnosing suspected uncomplicated acute diverticulitis.

Objectives: Despite evidence demonstrating equivalent accuracy of sonography and computed tomography (CT) in the workup of mild/uncomplicated acute diverticulitis, CT is overwhelmingly performed as the initial diagnostic test, particularly in the acute setting. Our study evaluated potential radiation and turnaround time savings associated with performing sonography instead of CT as the initial diagnostic examination in the workup of suspected uncomplicated acute diverticulitis.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from January 2010 to December 2012 for patients presenting with clinical symptoms of acute diverticulitis.

On this paper we outline a work program called Outpatient Therapeutic Family Space (Open Space) of the Non-Profit Organization La Casona de los Barriletes, whose goals consist of supporting youth going through discharge processes from shelter facilities in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) where they were admitted or residing, and contributing with the consolidation of social inclusion processes. After a brief inspection of the history of the institution from where this program is developed, we explain a group of conceptual themes that help us focus on the problems, and we develop notions such as vulnerability, mental condition/disorder/disease, and health/illness/care process. Based on these definitions, we describe areas for the development of multidimensional interventions from an interdisciplinary team, aiming at developing cross-institution and cross-sector coordination allowing for the construction of community reference networks for youth accompanied by their families or affective referents.

Evaluation and comparison of the ability of online available prediction programs to predict true linear B-cell epitopes.

This work deals with the use of predictors to identify useful B-cell linear epitopes to develop immunoassays. Experimental techniques to meet this goal are quite expensive and time consuming. Therefore, we tested 5 free, online prediction methods (AAPPred, ABCpred, BcePred, BepiPred and Antigenic) widely used for predicting linear epitopes, using the primary structure of the protein as the only input.

Morphological abnormalities in mitochondria of the skin of patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Objectives: Mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported in the central nervous system, hepatocytes and peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SALS). However, the status of skin mitochondria has not been reported, in spite of the fact that SALS patients present skin abnormalities. The objective of the present study was to compare mitochondrial ultrastructural parameters in keratinocytes from patients with SALS and healthy controls.
