The skin of anuran species is a protective barrier against predators and pathogens, showing also chemical defense by substances that represent a potential source for bioactive substances. This review describes the current chemical and biological knowledge from the skin secretions of Leptodactylidae species, one of the most diverse neotropical frog families. These skin secretions reveal a variety of substances such as amines (12), neuropeptides (16), and antimicrobial peptides (72).

The Clade Replacement Theory: a framework to study age-dependent extinction.

There is no scientific consensus about whether and how species' evolutionary age, or the elapsed time since their origination, might affect their probability of going extinct. Different age-dependent extinction (ADE) patterns have been proposed in theoretical and empirical studies, while the existence of a consistent and universal pattern across the tree of life remains debated. If evolutionary age predicts species extinction probability, then the study of ADE should comprise the elapsed time and the ecological process acting on species from their origin to their extinction or to the present for extant species.

The fossil collections made by early explorers in South America have been fundamental to reveal the past diversity of extinct mammals and unravel their evolutionary history. One important early explorer in South America was the Swiss-Argentine palaeontologist Kaspar Jacob Roth, known as Santiago Roth (1850, Herisau, Switzerland-1924, Buenos Aires, Argentina), who made significant collections of fossil mammals that are housed in museums in Europe and Argentina. The important collections of Roth in Switzerland include iconic Pleistocene megafauna from the Pampean Region (Argentina).

A Novel Active Device for Shoulder Rotation Based on Force Control.

This article describes a one-degree-of-freedom haptic device that can be applied to perform three different exercises for shoulder rehabilitation. The device is based on a force control architecture and an adaptive speed PI controller. It is a portable equipment that is easy to use for any patient, and was optimized for rehabilitating external rotation movements of the shoulder in patients in whom this was limited by muscle-skeletal injuries.

Human impacts outpace natural processes in the Amazon.

Amazonian environments are being degraded by modern industrial and agricultural activities at a pace far above anything previously known, imperiling its vast biodiversity reserves and globally important ecosystem services. The most substantial threats come from regional deforestation, because of export market demands, and global climate change. The Amazon is currently perched to transition rapidly from a largely forested to a nonforested landscape.

Madagascar's extraordinary biodiversity: Threats and opportunities.

Madagascar's unique biota is heavily affected by human activity and is under intense threat. Here, we review the current state of knowledge on the conservation status of Madagascar's terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity by presenting data and analyses on documented and predicted species-level conservation statuses, the most prevalent and relevant threats, ex situ collections and programs, and the coverage and comprehensiveness of protected areas. The existing terrestrial protected area network in Madagascar covers 10.

The neural correlates of value representation: From single items to bundles.

One of the core questions in Neuro-economics is to determine where value is represented. To date, most studies have focused on simple options and identified the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) as the common value region. We report the findings of an fMRI study in which we asked participants to make pairwise comparisons involving options of varying complexity: single items (Control condition), bundles made of the same two single items (Scaling condition) and bundles made of two different single items (Bundling condition).

Analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments and edible aquatic species in an oil-contaminated mangrove ecosystem in Bodo, Niger Delta, Nigeria: Bioaccumulation and human health risk assessment.

This work investigated the occurrence and risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tissues from five commonly consumed aquatic species (swimming crabs, estuarine shrimp, tiger prawns, periwinkles, and tilapia) and sediment across six sites in the area around Bodo town, in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. We aimed to establish a relationship between PAH concentrations in sediment and biota, and to derive biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs). Risks to human health associated with consumption of impacted food sources were assessed based on measured biotic concentrations of PAHs.

A Pliocene-Pleistocene continental biota from Venezuela.

The Pliocene-Pleistocene transition in the Neotropics is poorly understood despite the major climatic changes that occurred at the onset of the Quaternary. The San Gregorio Formation, the younger unit of the Urumaco Sequence, preserves a fauna that documents this critical transition. We report stingrays, freshwater bony fishes, amphibians, crocodiles, lizards, snakes, aquatic and terrestrial turtles, and mammals.

Epidemiology of snake envenomation from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Snake envenomation is considered a public health problem in tropical countries, where they occur in a high incidence. The present study reports the snake envenomation that occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul state (Brazil) between 2007 and 2017. Development of Simple and Sensitive Score to Assess the Risk of Pneumonia in COVID-19 Patients.

Background: Severe pneumonia is the most common cause of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death due to novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) respiratory disease (COVID-19). Due to its rapid outbreak, units for the evaluation of febrile patients in the pre-hospital setting were created.

Objective: The objective of the study was to develop a sensitive and simple tool to assess the risk of pneumonia in COVID-19 patients and thus select which patients would require a chest imaging study.

The interchange between the previously disconnected faunas of North and South America was a massive experiment in biological invasion. A major gap in our understanding of this invasion is why there was a drastic increase in the proportion of mammals of North American origin found in South America. Four nonmutually exclusive mechanisms may explain this asymmetry: 1) Higher dispersal rate of North American mammals toward the south, 2) higher origination of North American immigrants in South America, 3) higher extinction of mammals with South American origin, and 4) similar dispersal rate but a larger pool of native taxa in North versus South America.

Integration of phage and yeast display platforms: A reliable and cost effective approach for binning of peptides as displayed on-phage.

Hundreds of target specific peptides are routinely discovered by peptide display platforms. However, due to the high cost of peptide synthesis only a limited number of peptides are chemically made for further analysis. Here we describe an accurate and cost effective method to bin peptides on-phage based on binding region(s), without any requirement for peptide or protein synthesis.

Plasma inorganic pyrophosphate and alkaline phosphatase in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

Background: Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) plays a major role inhibiting dystrophic calcification. The aim was to analyze levels of PPi in patients having pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), and controls as well as the enzymes who regulate the PPi plasma concentration.

Methods: We collected fasting blood samples from PXE patients and age- and sex-matched controls in ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citrate-theophylline-adenosine-dipyridamole (CTAD) containing tubes.

Cognitive Function and Consumption of Fruit and Vegetable Polyphenols in a Young Population: Is There a Relationship?

Scientific evidence has shown the relationship between consumption of fruits and vegetables and their polyphenols with the prevention or treatment of diseases. The aim of this review was to find out whether the same relationship exists between fruits and vegetables and cognitive function, especially memory, in a young population. The mechanisms by which polyphenols of fruits and vegetables can exert cognitive benefits were also evaluated.

Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) for Conformational Measurements: Assay Development, Optimization, and Screening.

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) has recently emerged as a biophysical tool for conformational sensing of a target biomolecule upon binding to ligands such as small molecules, fragments, proteins, peptides, and oligonucleotides. To date, SHG has been used to measure conformational changes of targets such as soluble proteins, protein complexes, intrinsically disordered proteins, peripheral and integral membrane proteins, peptides, and oligonucleotides upon binding of ligands over a wide range of affinities. In this chapter, we will provide a technology overview, detailed protocols for optimizing assays and screening, practical considerations, and an example case study to guide the reader in developing robust and informative measurements using the Biodesy Delta SHG platform.

A Neuroeconomic Theory of Mental Time Travel.

We propose a theoretical model that places at the center of mental time travel (MTT) ability. This theory predicts that attention promotes a memory-based process that encodes memories of unexpected events, facilitates accurate recollection of information of such events during MTT, and optimizes subsequent decision-making. This process coexists with a habitual process that governs all other events and treats them equally.

Deciphering Binding Interactions of IL-23R with HDX-MS: Mapping Protein and Macrocyclic Dodecapeptide Ligands.

Molecular characterization of the binding epitope of IL-23R and its cognate cytokine IL-23 is paramount to understand the role in autoimmune diseases and to support the discovery of new inhibitors of this protein-protein interaction. Our results revealed that HDX-MS was able to identify the binding epitope of IL-23R:IL-23, which opened the way to evaluate a peptide macrocycle described in the literature as disrupter of this autoimmune target. Thus, the characterization of the interactions of this chemotype by HDX-MS in combination with computational approaches was achieved.

Shark and ray diversity in the Tropical America (Neotropics)-an examination of environmental and historical factors affecting diversity.

We present the first comprehensive review of the present and past shark and ray diversity in marine waters of Tropical America, examining the patterns of distribution in the Eastern Central Pacific (EP) and Western Central Atlantic (WA) realms. We identified the major regions of diversity and of endemism, and explored the relations to physical variables. We found a strong relationship between shark and ray diversity with area and coastal length of each province.

The determinants of strategic thinking in preschool children.

Strategic thinking is an essential component of rational decision-making. However, little is known about its developmental aspects. Here we show that preschoolers can reason strategically in simple individual decisions that require anticipating a limited number of future decisions.
