, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, is a parasite known for its diverse genotypic variants, or Discrete Typing Units (DTUs), which have been associated with varying degrees of tissue involvement. However, aspects such as parasite attachment remain unclear. It has been suggested that the TcI genotype is associated with cardiac infection, the most common involved site in chronic human infection, while TcII is associated with digestive tract involvement.

A total of 5011 adult volunteers attending vaccination centers in different regions of Colombia were enrolled in a 1-year prospective observational cohort study to evaluate the immunogenicity and effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2-based vaccines as part of a National Vaccine Program established to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Following informed consent, 5,011 participants underwent a sociodemographic survey and PCR testing to assess SARS-CoV-2 infection. Blood samples were collected, and serum fractions were obtained from a participant subsample (n = 3441) at six-time points to assess virus-specific IgG responses to the Spike protein, its Receptor Binding Domain, and the Nucleoprotein by ELISA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the effectiveness of using closed face shields along with surgical masks to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) among working adults in Bogotá, Colombia during the pandemic.
  • - Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one wore closed face shields with surgical masks while the other group wore only surgical masks, and the primary outcome assessed was the rate of positive COVID-19 test results over a follow-up period of 21 days.
  • - Results showed that the closed face shield plus surgical mask combination was not less effective than using just a surgical mask, with very low rates of infection in both groups, suggesting that this method could be suitable for high-risk settings.
