Article Synopsis
  • Pharmaceuticals are emerging pollutants, particularly in Central America, where their presence in farm wastewater and surface waters has been under-researched, especially in relation to dairy farming.
  • In a study, wastewater samples from seven dairy farms detected eight pharmaceuticals, with several posing high to intermediate risk based on ecotoxicological assessments that indicated toxicity to certain aquatic organisms.
  • Surface water samples revealed even more concerning results, with 14 pharmaceuticals found and a significant portion posing high environmental risks, highlighting a growing issue of pharmaceutical contamination in agricultural areas.
